No one wants to put themselves beneath God, or to state it another way, no one wants God above them. No matter what your argument against dressing appropriately for Mass, it all boils down to selfishness. Period.

No matter what your argument, it boils down to being judgmental and self righteous. I refuse to accept the notion that God concerns Himself with what clothing I wear to Mass.

When I was an Anglo-Catholic, our patronal feast was always on the hottest day of the year. One year, it was so hot that the 6 big candles on the reredos (picture: Tridentine style altar) bent over from the heat and toppled all over the Sanctuary. It was a High Mass. The Priest, Deacon and Subdeacon were all vested in cassock, alb, amice, and chasuble (or dalmatic/tunicle), and the sweat came through at the shoulder blades. Up in the choir loft, we measured the temperature at 103 F. Nobody even thought for a second of stripping down.

Dressing respectfully is a small way in which we live out the commandments to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves. It is not in the least “judgmental” or “self-righteous” to believe that a person who regularly attends Mass should be capable of observing Paul’s instruction to do all things “decently and in order” (I Cor 14:40). Someone who regularly attends Mass is not a stranger off the street who cannot be expected to understand what Mass is.

God knows what is in our hearts. If the clothing one wears less dressy than one wears to Big Boy on Saturday night, God knows.

How can you be sure God doesn’t care what one wears to Holy Mass? You can refuse to believe, but on what do you base that idea? Your feelings? How do you know that your feelings are right?
God knows when one puts in an effort in His name.
As my dear departed Father used to say, I’d rather cover all my bases.

Adding to what netmil(name removed by moderator) says, I will add the following comments:

When my Pastor, who is in his mid 50’s, wears vestments wrapped tightly up his neck on a day when it hits 100F in the Church (dressed no differently from when it is 70F), then out of respect for HIM, I should come to Mass dressed modestly as he has asked me to do, and by HIS definition of modest. If he can stand up there, stoicly in the heat, enabling me to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, then who am I to say that I need to wear shorts!

We are there to worship God and to please Him during this hour. It is not about what pleases us, nor should our worship of Him be conditional on our comfort. Rather, it would do us all good to be in discomfort for an hour to remind us of the fact that this IS a SACRIFICE. When you feel hot, and the sweat is dripping down your face, neck and back, put a smile on your face and offer it up to God and say, “Thank You Lord, for the opporunity to suffer a little with you this hour”. It is, afterall, only a small price to pay for what He offers us.

Something has to be in Alabama, so why not EWTN? But seriously ,I think that’s where Mother Angelica is from.

Years ago, before our current level of technology, it probably would have been mandatory to local a big network in Atlanta, LA, New York or another major media center.

But the power of the technology is that it can be located anywhere.
Mother Angelica is not from Alabama (I thought she was from Cleveland or somewhere up north)

Some of the comments have alleged that God doesn’t care what we wear. It’s funny. When you read the Old Testament, He gives specific directions as to what the priests will wear. I would imagine that is how this custom started to dress up for God.

I admit I am an old fogey when it comes to this topic. This past Sunday I was leader of song. I had on a sleeveless dress with a jacket over it. I was perspiring profusely. One woman in the choir kept telling me to take the jacket off. No way! Who wants to look at a 50-something woman with flapping arms? And of course I had pantyhose on.

I am not writing this to blow my own horn. I just believe that we should dress for God; to show Him the respect He deserves. God is not my friend. He is my Creator and my Lord. Yes, He loves me but He expects me to treat Him as the Supreme Being that He is.

Thank You God for the bringing all your children to church. Help me not to judge the those around me. Help me to focus in on You.

What’s dressing?
