Does anyone have/know where to find the full Ordinary of the Mass in Irish? I have a little booklet “The Mass in English and Irish” but it lacks the priest’s silent prayers before the Gospel, Preparation of the Gifts, and before Communion and Eucharistic Prayer I and IV.

Have you tried asking the Irish Conference of Catholic Bishops?

Dear AJV,

Here’s a site that might help you, it’s the mass in Irish Gaelic it’s posted at catholicireland.net catholicireland.net/pages/index.php?nd=249.

It is the mass of OF not EF. The mass in Irish Gaelic even in Ireland is rare, at most it is said / sung on special occassions and primarly in the west part of Ireland. To get through this Irish Mass it would be helpful if you knew gaelic due to the fact that this is not an english translation side by side.

If you want a Gaelic Mass which is more true to form in accordance with either the EF or the new translation of the NO / OF mass; it would be best to consult the Gaelic Book of Common Prayer which is also on line. The Church of Ireland (Anglican) has had their mass in Gaelic since 1608 and the Catholic Mass did not get translated until 1965 I believe. So they have a bit of a jump on us.

Thanks you all for the answers.

To be clear, I wanted the OF Mass. Br Mark, the CatholicIreland site is a lot like my booklet (missing a few parts) but also like it, it lacks the private prayers. I did look at the CofI (Anglican) books but I wanted an official translation that could be used in the Roman liturgy, and besides, they didn’t have the prayers I was looking for (perhaps unsurprisingly). 😃 😉

larousser, as far as I can see, your link was just what I needed 🙂 A couple of questions/requests:
  • are all the translations official?
  • is it a typo that the people respond “Agus leat fein” at the beginning?
  • what are the titles of the various prefaces?

Yes. The OF Roman Missal was translated into Irish by scholars in Maynooth from the Latin, not from the English. That site (from what is literally the ‘Board of Priests’) is a transcription of the official texts currently in use.

Yes, that indeed should be ‘Amen’.
what are the titles of the various prefaces?
Preafáid Na Nollag (Preface of Christmas)
Preafáid Na Cásca (Preface of Easter)
Preafáid Do Dhomhnach (Preface for Sunday)
Preafáid na Marbh (Preface of the Dead)

Preafáid Na Nollag (Preface of Christmas)
Preafáid Na Cásca (Preface of Easter)
Preafáid Do Dhomhnach (Preface for Sunday)
Preafáid na Marbh (Preface of the Dead)
Preafáid Don Mhaighdean Muire (of the Virgin Mary) and Preafáid Do Naomh (for a saint) also are on that page.

Thank you very much, larosser. What is “An Pósadh” and “Gnás na nEaslán”

You’re welcome. An Pósadh means ‘The Marriage’ or ‘the Wedding’. Gnás na nEaslán is sorta like the ‘Order for the Sick’.

Hi,

I, also, am very interested in finding the Mass in Irish language.

Unfortunately, the links posted in earlier replies in this thread do not appear to be working.

Are there updated links?

Thanks very much,

David

You probably need to use a different browser. Try Internet Explorer. It’s coming up in that browser. 🙂

can anyone give me the phonetic pronunciation for the apostles creed in Irish Gaelic
Thanks

I have an old mass book in irish. It was given to me by an irish speaking priest and has his notes in it for our dialect. It is 91 pages long. It is called Aifreann Dé Agus Leabhar Urnaithe
It was published by:
f.á.s
Foilseacháin ábhair Spioradálta
28. Sr. Seartha Uacht,
Báile átha Cliath 2

It was published in 1977 but maybe you can write to the above address and see if they are still around.

I’m sure you could find one if you wrote to a bishops office in dublin or something.
