This morning we had a Mass in Honor of our Departed Parishioners. I don’t know how legitimate this is, but I would much rather have a mass for the repose of my soul than one in my honor. :o

I’ve seen that phrasing a few times. It’s a very poor choice of words, and very misleading.

The Mass itself was legitimate. The catechesis is horrible . 😦

It’s an insult to the souls in Purgatory. They are asking for fish and priests are tossing them snakes.

This post reminds me of our All Souls day homily: our pastor commented how Catholics (more in recent decades… in general) like to canonize their deceased family members and friends. How fewer request Mass of Christian Burial and opt for memorial services where people honor the deceased person with eulogies, as opposed to praying for the repose of their souls. Eulogies that often proclaim the person was a saint and is definitely in a better place. Some becoming as confused as the general culture in claiming their loved ones got their wings in heaven.

He made note the only Saints (he ever knew of) that he buried where baptized infants .

He went on about our duty to pray for the dead and to have more realism about sin. Pray as if our loved ones are in purgatory {suffering and needing the prayers} and if they are not the prayers will never go to waste. Also expanding on the Communion of Saints.
