Greetings and peace to you.

My 21 yr. old daughter has just moved to San Diego and is hoping to find a Novus Ordo Mass in her new home celebrated the way she is used to with:
Code:
        very reverent, prayerful priest
strong teaching / preaching against sin
only priests distributing Holy Communion
Code:
        male-only altar boys
male-only lectors

the ordinary parts of the Mass in Latin

Gregorian chant / use of The Adoremus Hymnal

Does such a Mass exist in the San Diego area? How about any combination of the above? Thank you.

God bless,

Dana

Looking for the same for my 22-y.o. daughter in LA – though would settle for straight-up decent, even without the Latin or Adoremus hymnal. She isn’t Catholic yet.Where is your daughter from that she is used to such relative glory?

She has just moved from Portland, OR, where our family lives. We are blessed to still have a couple of NO churches with priests who appreciate Latin, Gregorian chant, and tradition. These are beautiful historic churches with their communion rails intact and used (thanks be to God).

Hi Dana,

Is one of the churches you are referring to in Portland Holy Rosary? And would the other be St. Patrick’s? Or is there some other church I am not thinking of? Thanks.

Dana,

It would be a bit of a drive for her, but if she’s interested, my parish has a Latin Trinintine (sp?) Mass every Sunday at 1:30 PM. We’re located in Rancho Cucamonga. It would probably be a good 2 hour drive for her.

I’ve never attended this Mass, so I can’t say if it meets your criteria, but I believe it does.

I think she requested a N.O. Mass - one without abuses - not a TLM

I’d like to know the names of those two parishes since I will be visiting my grand daughter who just moved to Portland - it is hard to find a N.O. Mass like you describe anywhere but I would certainly like to attend one.

The only “beautiful” Novus Ordo Mass in Portland is at 11:00a.m. at Holy Rosary Church. It is a High Mass with incredibly sung sacred music. You won’t be disappointed.

St. Patrick’s 7:30p.m. vigil Mass used to be the most beautiful, but alas, much has changed there to break our hearts.

We also attend St. Stanislaus. Our choir has recently left and we have a new priest (not as holy as the one that left and doesn’t like Latin). We have lost our beautiful Latin and Gregorian chant, but thank God we may still kneel at our communion rail and only receive from our priest.

In your past posts you have stated that you couldn’t find a well done NO Mass in Phoenix… and you couldn’t find a reverent Mass until the TLM came into town. This is the same logic I am using here

Not quite the same logic. I did not ever attend the SSPX and as a faithful Catholic would never recommend it to anyone.

I attended NOM for 3 years while praying for the TLM. Yes, the person in question might find a valid and licit TLM more acceptable than NOM’s that do not meet the standard she is used to but it it WRONG, WRONG, WRONG to recommend an SSPX Mass to her.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it. I am sorry about the losses at St. Patrick’s and St. Stanislaus.

Dana Lee,

I don’t know if there is actually a Novus Ordo parish in San Diego that fits all the criteria that you have laid out. For example, I know of no Novus Ordo masses in San Diego that makes use of the Latin, or one that has only male altar boys and lectors. But hopefully that will change in the future!

The “best” Novus Ordo parish I know of is St. John the Evangelist on Polk Avenue (not to be confused with St. John the Evangelist in Encinitas). Fr. William Dillard is a wise, young, and reverent priest. He gives good homilies, and the Mass is properly done. And they make use of the Adoramus Hymnal. I hear good things about St. Therese parish (Fr. Pedrano) in Camino Rico as well. Other than that, I’m not too sure that you have too many options. Is she willing to go check out Eastern Rite Masses? (as I see it, their Liturgies far surpass any of the Novus Ordo Masses I’ve seen).

Well, she might also want to consider the Benedictines at Prince of Peace Abbey. There’s no Latin either, but it’s one of the more reverent Masses. They are very faithful to the Magisterium. It’s in Oceanside though. It’s a half hour drive for me, but I’m not sure about your daughter’s case…

Now that I think of it, she’s probably better off coming to the T. L. M. sandiego-tlmc.org/ That seems to fill the whole criteria there. The Norbertines are a very solid order of Canons Regular Priests!

God Bless!

Edit: Oh, and she should visit the Norbertines on occassion. They’re located in Orange Country, so it’s about an hour to 11/2 hour drive. They also fill the whole criteria! www.abbeynews.com
