Mass in Spanish

Hey all,

I’m currently studying Spanish and I’m planning to attend mass in Spanish at a local parish within the next few weeks. I was wondering if any of you have been to or regularly attend a Spanish mass, and if there is anything in particular I should know. I found the text of the mass in Spanish online and have been looking over it, but any tips would be appreciated, I still have a lot to learn.

I go to a very nearby Spanish Mass on Saturday evenings from time to time. In fact I don’t bother with the English Mass anymore. I bring a printed Latin-Spanish booklet with me. People are very devotional and, although I don’t understand too much of the Spanish sermon, from the tone I can sort of figure it out.

Ironically, while my local English mass has Spanish/ English missals, my local Spanish mass does not. Bringing a missal for reading along is very helpful.

I’m wanting to learn spanish too, and our Church has a spanish Mass, and an English Mass. I’ve learned and memorized the Lord’s Prayer and the Hail Mary in spanish. I don’t know about your Church, but half of our missal is english and the other half is spanish. As long as you memorize the liturgy, then you’re good:thumbsup:

Great, thank you all! Do you know if the text of the Spanish liturgy changed when the English one was changed last November? I memorized the Gloria in Spanish, but it’s the “old” form, just want to make sure it’s the right one. It’s not the church I regularly attend so I’m not sure if they have Spanish missals.

I don’t know where you are located, but if you are in the USA, one thing you may or may not find out is that there are no standardized texts for the Mass in Spanish in dioceses of the USA! This applies to the Missal and to the Lectionary. Some use texts approved for Spain and some use texts approved for Mexico, (and I think that South America might have a third set of texts.)

You can tell the difference by subtle differences such as the use of vosotros vs. Ustedes.

Our choir director always has a hard time, because he is in charge of putting together disposable worship aids, and the readings must follow the Lectionary exactly, and he can never find an equivalent text online. It is also difficult when figuring out the verse for the Gospel Acclamation and similar things.

But as a person in the pew, you should not have trouble if you find a Missallette and stick with it. These are usually provided in the narthex or in the pews.

The Spanish liturgy has not yet been changed to conform with Liturgiam Authenticam, because it was already largely in compliance, being a similar language to Latin. The next revision of the Spanish Missal you may encounter is when the Fourth Typical Edition of the Roman Missal is promulgated (that is sometime in the future - the Third Edition just came out.)

Last I checked the Spanish Mass texts have not changed. But you’re okay to go, either way.
