I am going to be in St. Louis this coming week (Nov. 5-9) and would like to go to Mass. I’ll be at Union Square and I was curious as to which churches are close by the hotel. I have heard about St. Louis’ two cathedrals and I was wondering which of the two would be great for daily Mass and Sunday Mass.

This is how we found one in Phoenix.

Have a good time in St. Louis!

God bless you,

Ruthie

I presume that, when you say Union Square, you’re referring to Union Station. If so, directly across Market Street is the church of Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist. When I was working downtown I used to attend daily Mass there. The Ordinary Form is customary there, and Mass is celebrated with obedience and reverence.

By the way, there’s a beautifu; painting of the Transfiguration above the main altar.

Enjoy your visit.

I would suggest attending Mass at either the “old” (smaller white church on the Riverfront, near the Arch) or the “new” (huge basilica on Lindell, near Forest Park) cathedral. Both are beautiful, historic, and worth a visit. The new cathedral, in particular, is just amazing . . .

Thank you so much. The hotel is at Union Station, so St. John the Evangelist sounds like a good place to try. I am also going to try to sneak out to attend the Gateway Liturgical Conference. The Secretary to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments will be delivering the keynote address and I want to hear him.

Y’all pray for me.

Ever since I saw photos of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, I’ve always wanted to go visit it one day.

It seems like they have a beautiful music liturgy there. It looks like they are kids.

The St. Louis Cathedral is gorgeous too:

The refurbished organ sounds great.

If you go to either one of them, please let me know what it looks live and how the liturgy was. 🙂

Thanks. I’ll definitely let you know. It seems that I will be there for the feast of the dedication of the Lateran Basilica. Maybe the Secretary to the CDWDS will celebrate Mass. I hope so. I am trying to get the schedules for daily Mass so that I can visit at least three different parishes while I am there. I am really looking forward to seeing the Cathedral and its mozaics, as well as hearing some powerful sacred music.

you have transportation I suggest heading to our lady of the snows National Shrine…in Bellville.

Its within driving distance to St. Louis

BenedictGal, be sure and tell us, when you get back, all about the Masses, and the conference!

Looking forward to it,

Ruthie

Greetings!

I am sitting at the terminal in DFW waiting for my flight to St. Louis. Thanks to all who have given me suggestions.

I called the St. Louis Cathedral and learned to my great joy that the cathedral’s renowned choir will be singing at the 10AM Mass on Sunday. I am excited about this because I have heard so many things about the choir and their director, who also happens to oversee the office of Sacred Music for the Archdiocese.

Sarabande, I’ll let you know how the choir was and I’ll let y’all know about the conference.

Have a WONDERFUL time!!! Looking forward to hearing all about it. 😃

I’ll be interested in hearing what you thought of our beautiful churches. I worked near the Old Cathedral for years and it’s really special. There’s a museum there too, but I don’t know if it’s open on Sunday.

There are also several old churches near downtown that are lovely. Sts. Peter and Paul on Broadway is very nice. There’s a nice Latin Mass at Assumption in South County at 3pm, if you like that, and there’s not many other Masses in the afternoon. St. Francis Xavier is really old and kind of crumbly, but it’s THE place for Latin Mass in St. Louis and it’s not too far from Hodak’s Restaurant which has wonderful fried chicken.

There’s a Christ Church Cathedral (Episopalian, I think) downtown that’s really gorgeous. I missed a wedding there this summer because of a big accident that shut down the interstate, but I’ve been in it several times and it’s really special. There’s a Greek Orthodox church just south of downtown on Tucker (or 12th Street or Gravois, all the same thing) that’s old and has a very interesting roof. St. Raymond Maronite is on Choteau and Lebanon, and if they’re serving lunch, it’s a great place to eat. That’s a more modern church but it’s been there quite a while. The parish has been there since my parents were kids in the 1930s.

Correction: St. Frances de Sales is the latin mass church.

St. Francis xavier is the SLU college church.

St. PEter and Paul has been gutted and they have bleacher like seats in the round. Not cool.

DeSales! Of course, you’re right. I went to St. Louis U and I’m getting old. I haven’t been in Sts Peter and Paul since my friend Lynn got married, maybe 18-20 years ago. I didn’t know they did that. Is it still used as a Mass location? The outside is still very swell.

I grew up in Holy Family parish. That church was sold to individuals and was being used as their business and residence. Advertising, art gallery? Something not-churchlike. Very distressing. That was a wonderful parish. The old people in the neighborhood have a hard time getting to Mass now. St. Pius is the closest church still open, and it’s not English…I don’t remember if it’s Spanish, Viet Namese or Bosnian. That would have been the only other one close enough to walk. They’re supposed to be in St. John the Baptist now, at least most of them, and that was a long walk when I was in 8th grade. Holy Innocents was closed too. It’s a non-denomination church now. I know a few people who’ve gone there and seem to like it, but that doesn’t help those little old people in the Oak Hill neighborhood much. At one time there were people working on car pools, but that was a few years ago. I only know one person who still lives in the area. We really did lose a lot of our parishes over the last 10 or so years. Assumption is really thriving though.

I didn’t realize how cold St. Louis can be!!! When I left Laredo, it was a balmy 69 degrees (7:45AM). Now, we are at 35 degrees.

I managed to catch daily Mass at St. John the Apostle and Evangelist. Y’all were right about the mural. It is beautiful. We had about five people for Mass on Thursday and about eight for First Friday.

I managed to make it to the Gateway Liturgical Conference (the topics at my work-related conference had nothing to do with our program so I had free time). Let me tell you, it was the best $40 investment I had ever made as far as the Liturgy is concerned. Archbishop Malcolm Rajith, the Secretary for the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments made some very powerful statements, especially where ad orientsum was concerned. This particular subject didn’t sit too well with some of the participants, but, the seminarians were clapping.

He also talked about how the priests need to immerse themselves into Christ and not get creative. The seminarians were also applauding. When I get back, I’ll go into more detail about what he said. I also got to talk to him about the issue of sacred music and other matters.

Morning prayer was beautiful. Fr. Samuel Webber, OSB, the director of the Office of Music for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, served as the principle cantor and he was assisted by two seminarians (at least that is how it appeared to me). I got to have lunch with him and enjoy a delightful conversation on sacred music and the problems with the contemporary stuff. He certainly had a lot to say. I also got to meet y’all’s Apostolic Administrator, Bishop Hermann, as well as Helen Hitchcock, from Adoremus. She was also at my table during lunch.

The chapel where we had morning prayer was beautiful. I think it is the old seminary chapel. I took pictures (and had my picture taken with the Archbishop, who was most gracious).

I also attended a seminar on the New Translations, sitting next to someone with a LifeTeen portfolio. Agapewolf, was that you? I was going to introduce myself, but was a little nervous because if it wasn’t you, I didn’t want to weird the fellow out.😃 I think, though, that my comments would have given myself away, since they were similar to what I’ve been posting. When I get back home, I will also post some observations on the presentation.

I walked into the Old Cathedral. It is beautiful. The mural above the altar was gorgeous, as were the statues. I wish we could have stayed for Mass. I also walked into St. Francis Xavier (College) Church. I was disappointed with the fact that the Tabernacle was hard to find. I felt like St. Mary Magdalene (They have taken my Lord; where have they placed him). The church, itself, is a magnificent structure, but the chairs in the back were a little disconcerting. I had to make the visit quick because of a wedding.

Tomorrow my coworker and I are going to Mass at the Cathedral Basilica. I am really looking forward to this! Thanks to all who have been most helpful. St. Louis is a very friendly and hospitable place.

By the time you read this, you will be back home. Last weekend the weather in St. Louis was in the 70s! Another church for your next visit should be the shrine of St. Joseph. If you like the TLM, they have one at a side altar every Sunday.
