Mass in the face of Covid

I see it all over my Facebook that there are people absolutely furious that Bishops have dispensed the faithful from their Sunday obligation and shuttered the churches across the country.

There are people trying to get priests to go around to houses and deliver communion that way (which risks the priest or family contracting or carrying it), or attempt to have a “spiritual Communion” and “consecrate” bread in tandem with a televised Sunday Mass (which is heresy).

I’m obviously not required to attend Sunday Masses since Episcopalianism doesn’t have that, but what on Earth motivates people to not be satisfied with the dispensation the Bishops appropriately applied?

In my opinion, it is the attitude of “I want what I want when I want it, never mind anyone else or even objective reality”. Short version: Monumental selfishness.

I’m glad I haven’t heard of anyone doing that (until reading it here just now). We all miss the Eucharist, but people are showing it in a lot of odd ways.

Be patient with them. COVID has made many people I know seemingly take leave of their senses, in different ways (not all religious or Catholic-related). Also, we are living in a world where many Catholics for various reasons have decided they themselves know better than the priests and bishops. We see this all day every day on the forums even when there’s no pandemic going on.

Good point, and one I missed in my original reply. I suspect a lot of it is due to fear, manifesting as denial or stark terror or almost anywhere in between. Including selfishness in some. Thanks for the reminder.

From what I’m hearing, it’s not an outrage from being told they don’t have to go to mass during this time, but that they don’t have the opportunity to attend even if they wanted to. Those two mindsets aren’t necessarily the same thing.

I can’t speak to anyone being selfish or simply wanting their own way, because the country as a whole, isn’t experiencing the same level of outbreak and “crisis” as NY. Some states have very low confirmed cases and deaths in the single digits. So I can’t generalize one person’s view who lives in NY and say that their mindset should be the mindset of a person living in Hawaii for example.
