Perhaps some did. Speaking for [post=2216778]myself[/post], I know that the universal rubric calls for vessels to be made of precious metal (though exception can be made).

And I still say that a spacecraft costing upwards of millions of dollars and which integrity the very lives of the occupants depends I would esteem as “precious metal” indeed (presuming it is made of metal)

Do what we do at my rather conservative (tradition-minded) parish where I sometimes attend daily Mass - flash a peace sign from your pew, or better yet, knowingly nod at each other - we know what we mean!

Hey all,
I believe eventually, humans will not just live on Earth, our desire for exploration is too strong. So, thinking on this, I discovered that saying Mass in a zero-G environment could be tricky.
I have been trying to come up with a way that a vessel for the precious blood could be self-contained, and think I have found one. It just raises one major question:
Does the Priest’s breath have to be able to touch the wine for transubstantiation to occur? If not, then I think I have figured the problem out, if so, then I have more designing to do.

Yes, I am serious in proposing this. No, I did not forget to take my medication.

If the Triditine Mass were going to be said in space, which direction is East?

The actual direction does not matter. My parish - the altar faces North, but liturgically East as per the way everyone is orientated.

It matters not the direction. And as per the breath of the priest it is merely the action of intention that is shown by him breathing the words, not the breath touching the bread and wine.

There are more problems here on Earth. Come down to Earth my friend.

Re: the chalice

There were stories recently about a new spiralling straw/tube shape of drinking vessel for space, which allowed more convenient drinking. But the gold foil pouches would also work, especially since straws have been used for eucharistic distribution in the past.

There’s nothing stopping there being a cabinet in the wall behind the altar with a shaped tabernacle inside. That’s what my home parish had. And everybody knew where the tabernacle was.

I’ll transfer over to the Archdiocese of Mars as soon as NASA is finished perfecting the airtight albs. I prefer 1/3 gravity over the moon’s 1/6 gravity, plus I like red brick buildings better than grey ones.
