I practicing the First Friday, and First Saturday devotions, and the devotions speak receiving Holy Communion for the intention of reparation, not attending mass. I’m confused, does this mean that one can have different intentions for mass and receiving Communion at mass?

I would guess so. After all, you don’t have to receive communion at Mass, otherwise those guilty of mortal sin would be in quite a pickle.

I have wondered about this similarly.

I have a collection of letters my father had written home from WWII. He sometimes writes of having had the opportunity to attend Mass and receive communion “for” his brother (who had been killed in action).

When your father said that he attended Mass and received communion I think he would be speaking about one Mass during which he received Holy Communion .

Some today say “I attended Mass this morning and received Holy Communion.”

Yes, I understand that part.

It is the part about receiving communion “for” someone else thst is unfamiliar to me.

My understand is that your father attended Mass (which included receiving Holy Communion) for your uncle .

I could attend Mass for my mother . That would include my receiving Holy Communion . So I could have said I attended Mass and received Holy Communion for my mother . The saying that I received Holy Communion would really be superfluous because it is included in my attending Mass .

I don’t know if that makes sense .

You misunderstand.

The mass intention was not for my uncle. Only my father’s intention in receiving.

Or am I the one who had never learned this practice? (Though the OP leads me to think I am not)
