Could you help a newbie, please?

My daughter is going to have open heart surgery in a few weeks. I would like to ask that a mass be said for all babies/children living with cardiac issues. I would also like to have a Mass said for each of our sons that passed away.

How much should I offer for these intentions? What is typical for your parish? Thank you!

At my parish, all you have to do is call the parish office and tell the secretary what intention(s) you want a Mass(es) said and when. She checks the Mass calendar and lets you know if those dates are available and, if they are not, what dates are. It is also customary, but not required, to offer a stipend for each Mass request. The amount of the stipend is up to you, I usually give $10 per Mass.

The customary stipend at our parish is also $10. It’s entirely appropriate to ask the secretary what the normal stipend is.

OH! Ok. I didn’t realize it would be ok to ask…I didn’t want to be inappropriate about it. 👍 I tend to walk around with my foot in my mouth to begin with. 😃

I’m not nearly that talented. I can barely walk with both feet on the ground! 😃

If you tell me when your daughter is having surgery, and her first name, I will pray for her that day…I am a registered nurse and I dearly loved working with the little ones who were the sickest.

Thank you SO much!! Her name is Summer. We will get the exact date of her surgery in about three weeks. I was told to expect the surgery within two weeks of that date. So we are looking at the end of July/beginning of August.

God bless you for the work that you do!!

in our area $10. Others say $20. When you call the parish they tell you what is the usual offering, for poor some parishes offer discount and they accept more.

The interesting in this that this was the same in the 1950’s in the US, regardless that the 1950 $10 now worth about $60.

In many parishes, there will be a box of some sort that contains the prayer requests of parishoners that is placed near the foot of the altar during weekly Masses. Although these intentions are not read aloud, they are included as part of the acknowedged intentions.
You could ask if your parish has such a box. What happens is that the box is kept somewhere in the narthex so that people can write down their intentions on a piece of paper and put the paper into the box. Before each Mass the box is then placed on the steps in front of the altar. In my parish, the box is only emptied by the priest once a week so one might have their intentions prayed for every day that week.

I would be honored to do this. You can send me a private message with the date, if you wish, but as of now, she is in my daily prayers.

I’m praying as well, and keep us posted. You might want to check to see if your parish has a prayer chain.

we are all praying for your intentions of course

you ask at your parish for your Mass intentions. If all the Masses for the year have already been scheduled with intentions, the many missionary societies such as Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Sacred Heart Fathers, etc. assign these intentions to their priests. yes a nominal donation is customary to aid their good work, ask what is customary, seems to be $5 most places but the intention will certainly be accepted without any donation but you should in turn pray for the priests.

Resurrecting this thread, hoping that all went well for little Summer. She has been in my prayers since I first read your thread. I hope all are at peace and doing well.
