Is it acceptable/appropriate to have a Mass said for a deceased relative or friend who was a non-Catholic?

When I had Masses said for 2 relatives, I wasn’t asked if they were Catholic (they were, but I wasn’t asked, nor did I mention it).

I have requested Mass intentions for various people—relatives, friends, priests—in four parishes and two cathedrals. The only question I’ve ever been asked is whether the person is living or deceased.
