Mass kit for kids!

I heard about this today on Al Kresta in the Afternoon on EWTN radio:

I recall my cousin (who will be celebrating his 35th yr of ordination) saying his mom made him vestments to play mass as a kid. On this site, they quote Archbishop Ray Burke as saying the same thing, only he had a purchased kit. He and my cousin attended seminary together.

In Catholic elementary school, we sometimes used candy wafers as Hosts, playing mass on the playground. Guess the sisters thought it was harmless, but I remember my girlfriend doing the distributing (and in those days, there were no extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion).

Besides My Mass Kit, they also have vocation dolls; coming soon is My Quiet Church.

It’s cute, but WOW is it expensive. If you go to the site between now and Sunday you can vote on the family names and such for their next project. It’s cute. My daughter entered but she’s not one of the finalists.

I have to wonder if most kids won’t treat it as a toy, fight over it, throw it around and then discard it like any other toy. Could it be setting them up for a cavalier attitude later toward the Real Thing? Maybe not.

My brother and I used to “play Mass” back in the 50’s, but because I was older and it was always my idea, I got to be the priest, girl or not! My little brother always got stuck being the altar boy. It’s funny that as little kids it hadn’t yet occurred to us that there weren’t any girl priests!
(And no, I didn’t grow up to be a flaming liberal…)
