Hi,
Usually a priest holds up the paten and chalice doing the words. Through Him, with Him, and in Him.
In another church a priest held up the host and chalice instead (not the paten). Was this a mistake by the priest, or another way that it can be done?

Done regularly, particularly if a paten is not used. Can’t hold up what does not exist. And if there is a deacon,he holds up the chalice.Our pastor holds up the Host and the ciborium. Our deacon holds the chalice.

Nope, our priest holds up the large host, then the chalice

Often both are elevated. Sometimes the priest puts a small piece of the host in the chalice in which case both might be elevated with the chalice.

Or it could be the priest made a mistake. Not earth shattering though.

I think you will find you will enjoy mass much more if you concentrate on Jesus being truely present in the Eucharist than if you concentrate on whether or not the priest “crossed his T’s and dotted his I’s”. Even if a mistake was made, it does not negate anything, it would be just that; a mistake.

Thank you all for you replies. Now I understand.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Not at this point in the Mass, though. The ‘fraction rite’ takes place during the praying of the “Lamb of God” (‘Agnus Dei’). And, it’s not “sometimes” – it’s always. 😉

That’s the way the ritual prescribes it – the priest holds up the paten with the host and the chalice.

Perhaps he just got confused.
