Tonight is Mass of Oils here. A big and very formal Mass, clergy and representatives from every Parish in the Diocese attend and receive oils for the coming year.
The Choir will be wearing black.
This Mass is a real get together of everyone across the Diocese which covers a huge area. Some people will be driving 6 hrs to get to the Cathedral.

I can only imagine Mass of the Oils in Canada and Alaska with their vast distances. A fly in, fly out Mass, in some places.

Our Chrism Mass took place last Wednesday and the Bishop scheduled study days around it for his priests who also have to travel very long distances.

From my parish to the Cathedral is at least 12 hours of driving and a 90 minute ferry ride, when the ferry’s not docked due to high winds. Add at least 6 hours to that for the priests in the nearest parish to our west. That’s how long it would take them just to get to our town. Needless to say, the priests here fly to the nearest airport and still have to drive about 40 minutes on the highway to get to the diocesan see.

I believe the Alaska Oil Mass looks something like this…

I just moved to the city last month, and I live near the Cathedral. This will be my first time attending the Chrism Mass, which will take place on Holy Thursday morning.

The Chrism Mass for our Archdiocese is always Tuesday of Holy Week.

Really? There’s only supposed to be ONE Mass on Holy Thursday…the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Interesting.

The Roman Missal actually calls for the Chrism Mass to be on Holy Thursday morning, but bishops have been given pastoral leeway to schedule it elsewhere in or just before Holy Week.

No. The preferred day for the Chrism Mass is actually the morning of Holy Thursday. But if the diocese is too large (geographically) then it can be moved.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia always has the Chrism Mass on the morning of Holy Thursday. But we can drive from the Cathedral to the farthermost ends of the Archdiocese in just over 1 hour.

NOTE: Parishes are only supposed to have 1 Mass on Holy Thursday.

Forgive me but that reminds of someone who worked in Kuwait after the Gulf War who was quoted as saying that if Hell had a national park he thought they had found it.

I love going to the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday.

One suggestion though… get there early. If your Cathedral is like mine, it will be packed and many of the pews might be filled with priests and deacons.

At our Cathedral, they bring out chairs to add seating in by the side altars and some people are standing.

Regardless - totally beautiful Mass and I highly suggest everyone attend at least one, esp if it’s in your Cathedral (I know some dioceses move it from their Cathedral to a centrally located parish if the Cathedral city isn’t in the center of the diocese.)

God Bless

Depends in the case of Cathedral Churches though.
THURSDAY OF HOLY WEEK [HOLY THURSDAY]
  1. In accordance with a most ancient tradition of the Church, on this day all Masses without the people are forbidden.
    The Chrism Mass
  2. The blessing of the Oil of the Sick and of the Oil of Catechumens and the consecration of the Chrism are carried out by the Bishop, according to the Rite described in the Roman Pontifical, usually on this day, at a proper Mass to be celebrated during the morning.
    3. If, however, it is very difficult for the clergy and the people to gather with the Bishop on this day, the Chrism Mass may be anticipated on another day, but near to Easter.
The traditional practice of the time and date for the Chrism Mass is on Holy Thursday morning. If, however, that diocese/archdiocese is large, it can be done on a date before Holy Thursday.

The Archdiocese of Manila has it on Thursday morning, where Cardinal Tagle will preside. Our diocese (Diocese of Cubao) has it on Thursday morning.
Even my former diocese where I lived (Diocese of Antipolo) has it on Thursday morning, despite how huge is its territory (there are even some island parishes). It’s neighboring diocese (Diocese of Malolos), according to a friend of mine, will have their Chrism Mass tomorrow.

Thanks for the tip! I might be going to the Cathedral at 5:30 am to get a seat.

Ours start at 6:30 am, after the 6:00 am Lauds, which is presided by the Bishop as well.

We had a lovely Mass of the Oils tonight.
All our Priests sit in the Sanctuary, behind the Bishops.
Full choir, full pews and lots of little Children.

Shoot, I just started another related thread before I saw this one.

I’ve actually been chosen to present the oils at ours tomorrow night. I’m nervous lol

It as great watching all the processions and collections. I think it’s the most formally dressed Mass I have attended.
