Mass on television?

I was recently wondering if Mass on television would be a good idea to watch daily as some time in prayer with God. But I was thinking, since you can’t receive the Eucharist through your television, would it still be a good idea? I would never substitute it for Sunday Mass, but I thought it would be a good way to get closer to God during weekdays, and also a good way to save gas. Thoughts?

Mass on tv is a wonderful thing especially for those of confined to home for various reasons, be it due to mobility problems or other problems. I have found great solace in daily Mass in this form. Given the economy as it is, gas prices etc; it can’t hurt to go to Mass this way. As you said it doesn’t replace Sunday Mass in the church itself. EWTN now has closed-captioning for the hearing impaired as well. God bless you.

If, for no reason of your own, you can’t go to daily Mass, (such as work schedule, family obligations) it is definitely worthwile to watch it on tv–just don’t do other things while you are watching. You can receive a spiritual communion with God since you can’t actually receive the Eucharist.

The power and graces of the Mass transcend the medium it is being delivered in. But it is not a replacement for a Mass you could actually attend.

I should have qualified my answer somewhat. Many people are on fixed and/or very limited incomes. If this is not the case, and a person has income enough, no family or job or capability constraints, then of course they should go to the Church for Mass. And your point about paying attention to the Mass itself is well taken.

Yes, of course and one could also make a spiritual Communion while watching.

Yes, watching mass on TV is a beauriful way to listen to the readings and the Gospel and at the ame time you are learning.

As for Communion, you can make a Spiritual Communion at the time they have Communion on TV.

If you do not know what a Spiritual Communion is, I will write it down for you.

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Holy Sacrament. I love, adore, and in adoration above all things and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive YOU SACRAMENTALLY, come at least spiritually into my heart. ***If one has the opportunity to attend daily Mass, one should do so as it Really is Jesus, our very God that we receive in Holy Communion.

If on the other hand, for what ever reason one is NOT able to attend daily Mass, TV Mass like *EWTN **is a very pious practice and too a source of grace, although not to the degree of being at Mass in person. IT’s a wonderful practice!

Know however that a TV Mass can Never fullfil ones Sunday Obligation, except for the “home bound.!”**

While watching the daily mass on television is it proper to do the gestures the same as if you would do if you were there?

There are no stated requirements. Do whatever is comfortable for you.

I used to take Communion to the sick. Many would watch a TV mass before I got there. This is good preparation. I would then cut my service short to the essentials of Communion since they already had experienced the readings, homily etc.
