If you pick up a book called the lambs supper by Scott Hahn it details how alot of the mass is based on johns beatific vision in the book of revelation. The nicea creed is from the council of nicea of course. Mostly tradition. The eucharist is the focal point of the mass which is directly from the last suppper in all 4 gospals.

Hope this helps

Where do all the things that are said during Mass come from?
Lots of things said at Mass come from Scripture (either directly or indirectly). Most of the prayers of the Mass are very old (although some are considerably more recent than others).

There’s another thread (here) that deals with the Scriptural aspect of the Mass. I’m also working on a comprehensive text that looks at the Ordinary of the Mass from a Scriptural and catechetical perspective.

Hi Tom,

All that the previous posters have said is accurate and valuable. In addition, I’ll add that many of the prayers we use uring mass are based on prophecies of the Old Testament.

For example, there is a line in one of the communion rites that goes “… so that from east to west, a perfect offering will be made, to the glory of your name…”. This line is paraphrasing a prophecy about the mass that comes straight out of Malachi 1:11. From the Douay-Rheims Bible:

“For from the rising of the sun even to the going down, my name is great among the Gentiles, and in every place there is sacrifice, and there is offered to my name a clean oblation: for my name is great among the Gentiles, saith the Lord of hosts.”

The sacrifice and clean oblation that is being offered is, of course, Jesus Christ in the consecration. The prophecy indicates that this oblation will be offered to the glory of God’s name, and it will happen from the rising of the sun even to its setting. The mass, this sacrifice and clean oblation, is celebrated all around the world such that it is always taking place at a time when the sun is rising/setting in a given time zone.

I thought that was really cool when I first learned it, but I don’t know too much more. I’ve heard Scott Hahn’s book is awesome for that purpose as someone already suggested. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me can post some more examples.

Can you clarify what you mean, Tom Hale? From one viewpoint, they come from the Scarmentary and Lectionary, but somehow, I don’t think that’s what you’re really asking.

Acctually, Scott Hahn saw the Book of Revelation as a description of the mystery of the mass, not that the mass comes from the Book of Revelation.

Hi, it’s Tom here!
I just wanted to say thank you to the persons who answered my question about the Mass parts. I’m new to this site and I’m still learning how to access all the features. Thanks again and blessings on your ministries,
Tom
