What are your thoughts on the Mass readings for July 31st? I thought that they were really beautiful!

First Reading:
Thus says the LORD:
All you who are thirsty,
come to the water!
You who have no money,
come, receive grain and eat;
Come, without paying and without cost,
drink wine and milk!
Why spend your money for what is not bread;
your wages for what fails to satisfy?
Heed me, and you shall eat well,
you shall delight in rich fare.
Come to me heedfully,
listen, that you may have life.
I will renew with you the everlasting covenant,
the benefits assured to David.
  • Isaiah 55:1-3
Second Reading:
Brothers and sisters:
What will separate us from the love of Christ?
Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine,
or nakedness, or peril, or the sword?
No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly
through him who loved us.
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life,
nor angels, nor principalities,
nor present things, nor future things,
nor powers, nor height, nor depth,
nor any other creature will be able to separate us
from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • Romans 8:35, 37-39
Gospel Reading:
When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist,
he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself.
The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns.
When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd,
his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.
When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said,
“This is a deserted place and it is already late;
dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages
and buy food for themselves.”
Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away;
give them some food yourselves.”
But they said to him,
“Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.”
Then he said, “Bring them here to me, ”
and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven,
he said the blessing, broke the loaves,
and gave them to the disciples,
who in turn gave them to the crowds.
They all ate and were satisfied,
and they picked up the fragments left over—
twelve wicker baskets full.
Those who ate were about five thousand men,
not counting women and children.

I’m with you - I love each and every one of those and felt so blessed to hear them all last night at mass!

I find it so touching that when Jesus heard of John the Baptist’s death, he withdrew to be alone, as many of us would. But when He saw the crowds follow Him, He was “moved with pity for them.”

Isn’t that just precious? ❤️

The Gospel reading must be intepreted from the perspective of a 1st Century Jew and what they knew and believed.

12 loaves of bread were kept in the temple, in the Holy Place outside of the Holy of Holies. These loaves were baked fresh weekly and the old loaves were replaced with new loaves. When the new loaves were placed on the golden table, the priests ministering to the temple were then able to eat the old loaves. We know this from Leviticus 24.

*** “And you shall take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes of it; two tenths of an ephah shall be in each cake. And you shall set them in two rows, six in a row, upon the table of pure gold. And you shall put pure frankincense with each row, that it may go with the bread as a memorial portion to be offered by fire to the LORD. Every sabbath day Aaron shall set it in order before the LORD continually on behalf of the people of Israel as a covenant for ever.** And it shall be for Aaron and his sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place, since it is for him a most holy portion out of the offerings by fire to the LORD, a perpetual due.” (Leviticus 24:5-9)*

Notice that the Bread of the Presence of God was a perpetual offering. What is little known about the Bread of the Presence of God is that a piece of it satisfied anyone who ate it. The Babylonian Talmud, a commentary written by Jewish Rabbis from the 4th century BC to the 2nd century AD, contains the following:

During the whole period that Simon the Righteous ministered as High Priest, a blessing was bestowed upon the omer, the two breads, and the Bread of the presence, so that every priest, who obtained a piece as big as an olive, ate it and became satisfied with some eating thereof and even leaving something over. (Babylonian Talmud, Yoma 39a)

This should immediately bring to mind the feeding of the 5000 in the wilderness

**They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over --twelve wicker baskets full. **(Matthew 14:20)

1st Century Jews who were there would have immediately known what was going on. The bread in the Temple became holy and satisfied those who ate a small piece of it because it was placed in God’s presence. Before it was placed in front of the Holy of Holies in the temple, it was ordinary bread. After being in the presence of God, it became the “Bread of God’s Presence.” The five loaves at the feeding of the five thousand was ordinary bread which became holy and satisfied all who ate (with some left over) in Jesus presence and at his word. It was Jesus who gave them the bread.

If God’s presence can make bread holy and satisfying, and Jesus can give the same type of bread, what does that say about God and Jesus? Sorry Jehovah’s Witnesses. 😦 You can rewrite the Bible and you can tell Catholics that its not what it really says, but you can’t rewrite history. It’s right there. Jesus is God :bowdown2:

(Jesus) said to them, "There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves." (Matthew 14:16)

I love this passage. Jesus isn’t just being sarcastic. Far from it. It is a command. Jesus tells the disciples that they are to feed the 5000.

…and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. (Matthew 14:19)

Jesus enables the disciples to fulfill the command that they are to feed the crowd. Notice how he gives the bread to his disciples who in turn feed the crowd.

The gospel reading today is sublime. It speaks of the divinity of Christ and how church is to feed the crowds with miraculous “Bread of the Presence of God”. I was happy to have the priest at Mass today teach about how we are to be reverent when we receive the Eucharist because it is actually Jesus’ presence - the Bread of the Presence of God.

Thank you for the readings. I was unable to go to mass due to a sick mother.

I debate quite a bit with Protestants. One thing I really got out of the gospel reading was how when Jesus broke bread, He didn’t go out and give to the people Himself. No! He gave it to the apostles to distribute it. Don’t our priests distribute the bread of our Lord Jesus?

What I love about the first reading is God calling us to Him. He wants us. He wants to know us; to love us; to be with us.

In the second reading I was reminded again that it is our sin, ourselves that seperates us from God. Not anyone else. It also says in 2 Corinthians 6 that “you are not restricted by us, you are restricted by your own affections.”

And that is my thoughts!

I thought immediately of the debt ceiling discussions and of JESUS teachings, “Be Not Afraid”.

“…why spend your money …on what fails to satisfy…” First Reading

“What will separate us from the love of CHRIST? Will anguish or distress…or famine…” Second Reading

“…give them some food yourselves…” Gospel

Our government is arguing over the failure of our government, which has taken maybe 50 years to finally come to a head wherein the financial scenario can no longer continue “business as usual” and as a matter of the default of time, the current members of both houses/parties find themselves on the short end of the stick - no winners; but lot’s of crazy threats, and “if/then” statements etc

And then, the readings and the Gospel. GOD does work in mysterious ways.

Our economy, as important as it is, is not the door to eternity. JESUS is, and our faith should lead us to HIM.

Our financial structure and symbols and monetary denominations, we have left to absentee owners (congress/senate) when it was our duty to care for that ourselves. While our elected leaders - of both parties failed us - we did nothing over these many years, except watch out for #1 - did I get mine - while JESUS message in the Gospel is clearly the opposite.
