Hello all,

I’ll be travelling to Toronto, Ontario in a couple of weeks. Does anyone have a praish to recommend for for a godd, orthodox mass? I would prefer Latin (espcially N.O.–cut me some slack 🙂 – but Tridentine is OK), but any traditional mass will suffice.

Thanks for your advice in advance!

Hi Vox Borealis.

I’ve just joined the forum … and, wow, I think I can already answer a question! 🙂

My recommendation for an “orthodox” parish in Toronto would be one of the two served by the Oratory Fathers: Holy Family and St Vincent de Paul.

For example, I know there is an 11:00 am Sunday morning Latin NO Mass at Holy Family and, if I remember correctly, they serve the TLM at 9:30 am Sunday at St Vincent de Paul. But do visit their web site at the link above for more exact info.

Hope this helps … and I hope you enjoy your stay in TO!

I very much agree with Victor on this. The Oratorians are wonderful with absolutely lovely chant, excellent homilies, and fantastic liturgy! If you get the chance to, try making it to one of the “Oratory evenings” or a night of Bible/catechism/Latin study. You can find information on specific times in the bulletin, which is on the website.

Hi, Vox Borealis!

It is clear from your post that you’re looking for a Mass to attend in the Roman or Latin tradition. If I may, please allow me to make a suggestion: why not use your trip to Toronto as an opportunity to experience our Catholicism in an entirely different liturgical light? There is a wonderful Eastern Catholic parish, St. Elias, located in Brampton, just on the outskirts of Toronto…

St. Elias parish is part of the Ukranian Greek Catholic Eparchy of Toronto and is in full communion with Rome. This means that the Divine Liturgy (“Mass” in the Roman Catholic church) is fully Catholic, just as Catholic as any Novus Ordo or Tridentine Mass you may attend. As a Catholic yourself, you are absolutely free to attend (and, yes… it does “count” toward your Sunday obligation 😉 ) and to receive Our Lord in Holy Communion (provided, of course, that you are in a state of grace that would allow you to do so in any Catholic church).

As a Ukranian Greek Catholic Church, St. Elias parish worships in the Byzantine tradition. From what I understand, the parish is very welcoming and accommodating to visitors such as yourself.

It’s apparent that you’re very familiar with both the Novus Ordo and Tridentine traditions as practiced by the Latin Church - what a wonderful opportunity this would be to add yet another Catholic liturgical worship tradition, the Byzantine tradition, to your personal list of Catholic experiences!

…just something to think about, my friend… 🙂

While I have yet to attend Divine Liturgy at St. Elias, I can “essentially” second that suggestion as well. First off because my Greek tutor has basically told me I must go and so have pretty much all the Eastern Christians here in the forums. It does sound absolutely wonderful! I’d love to go.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have attended eastern liturgies of varying degrees of communion in the past (Coptic was remarkable). It all depends what the wife says!
