Mass singing the Our Father and non church songs

Our family yesterday (Saturday), attended the Vigil Mass. On Saturday evening Mass our parish has a Folk group that sings and we sing the Our Father, is that ok? Not too many people like this.
They also sang an Alan Jackson song before the Mass started, I don’t know the title of the song but it was the one about September 11th. It’s hard to pray and focus on the Mass when they are singing.

As far as I know there’s nothing wrong with singing the “Our Father”. Our parish does every Sunday (it’s about the only way to get everyone in the parish to sing at once ).

I don’t know about the Alan Jackson song. Since it was before the Mass there was probably not anything technically wrong with it but it could probably be considered in poor taste. I agree, it would be difficult to pray before Mass with something like that going on.

Our parish has actually STOPPED singing the Our Father at all the Masses, and they’ve become more in-tuned with following the recommended songs for the celebration of the Liturgy of the Mass. With good pastoral leadership, it’s wonderful to see the reverence coming back to our worship.

The Pater Noster has been sung as a chant quite a while (I have no idea how long). We stopped singing “Our Father” at many Masses because it is easier to get 100% participation from the older parishoners by speaking it.

I dont think thats a problem in the city where Dave lives.

It’s not really the sining that bothers me so much it’s more the style of how it’s sang, it’s like folksy, 1960’s type singing, it’s just not too Churchy, if you know what I mean.

This evening our guitar group sang The Angel Lyric song by Sarah McLachlan during mass and sang a sing-songy version of the Our Father, which is sang in an echo fashion which is bad enough. But…the words are completely changed as well. Very tacky and I think actually not correct. This group stand up in front and dances around like they are performing and are the center of attention. Very distracting.

If I remember correctly, the Our Father was sung even in Pope John Paul II’s funeral Mass and Pope Benedict XVI’s inaugural Mass.

The church that I attend not only sings Our Father but instead of ending after “deliver us from evil” also signs immediately “For the Power and Glory is yours forever and ever, Amen” The prayer that normally is said after Our Father is completely omitted. I thought that you were not supposed to do that, right?

No, you aren’t supposed to do that. The words of the Mass must NEVER be changed unless the General Instruction of the Roman Missal gives the priest or local ordinary the authority to do so, which it does not in this case. If a piece is just folksy, but it keeps the words correct…well, that’s another problem all together.

Thank you Holy Lord, I escaped from that church.
