Mass timing for Obligation

Hey odd question. I live in a super small town where the mass for Christmas Eve is held at 11:45 PM in addition the standard services. Does the 11:45 Eve sunday service satisfy my Sunday Obligation or my Christmas Obligation or both. Ideally I will be going to two but if that does not work which obligation does the Sunday night mass meet?
 
Can. 1248 §1. A person who assists at a Mass celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the feast day itself or in the evening of the preceding day satisfies the obligation of participating in the Mass.

Can. 202 §1. In law, a day is understood as a period consisting of 24 continuous hours and begins at midnight unless other provision is expressly made;

Midnight Mass is on Christmas Day and therefore cannot fulfill the Sunday obligation. A Christmas Vigil (held earlier int he evening) can fulfill either obligation, but not both. You must attend two Masses, and at least one of them must actually be on Sunday.
 
Thanks that was the answer I was hoping for. So sunday evening and then monday morning will work for my obligations. Thanks!

The obligation for Sunday is at a Sunday Mass. The vigil Masses of Christmas, celebrated on Sunday evening, satisfy the obligation for Christmas.

One can either go to Mass Sunday (which is highly likely to be a Mass before 5 p.m. in almost any Catholic Church). They then can go again on Sunday to one of the Christmas Vigil Masses (some of which start at 5 p,m,), or on Monday to a Christmas Mass.

There are several threads on the matter, and that is what they hold. Additionally many church bulletins are saying the same thing.

Yes, but Mass at 11:45 PM isn’t Sunday evening. All the essential parts of the Mass are said after midnight.
 
Canon law defines the obligation based on the time at which Mass is said, not the readings and prayers used. Consequently a Christmas Vigil (said entirely before midnight) can satisfy the Sunday obligation (but not both).
 
So if said partially before midnight and after midnight it would not cover my sunday obligation. My trouble is I do not if I will be able to make any other eve mass. So my original plan was to use the 11:45 PM vigil to cover my sunday (eve). Then I was going to go to the 1pm Christmas day mass to cover my Christmas obligation. If this doesnt work I need to rework the direction im driving.

You could ask your priest for a dispensation. Otherwise you’ll need to attend a Mass that’s entirely on Sunday.

Yes. Any mass between Saturday evening (the US just about every Bishop sets this at 4 PM) and 11:59 PM Sunday counts for Sunday.

Any mass between Sunday evening and 11:59 PM on Monday this year counts for Christmas.

There is no 2-4-1
 
It cannot satisfy both simultaneously.

Since it straddles both days, it seems it could technically satisfy either, although substantially all the mass is actually on Monday so let’s not split hairs here. It is intended to be for the Christmas obligation.

If you haven’t already met your Sunday obligation, select a mass earlier in the evening for your Sunday obligation and then the mass at night or one on Christmas morning for the Christmas obligation.

I have to go on sunday mass today the 24th december.

So now it is 19:24 and the only mass left this sunday is Julnattsmässa 22:00 and Christmass mass 24:00.

I think I have to go on Julnattsmässa 22:00 as the sunday mass for 24th of december. Then Christmass mass beginning 24:00 is the same mass that is on Sunday the 25th.

Is this correct or are there maybe no sunday masses left this day which means I have missed a sunday mass and cant go to communion without confession?
 
Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut i have managed to find a 10pm mass in one city today and another noon mass in another city on 12/25. I believe this should cover my bases. I am not looking for a two for one, just a way to do two that were both valid and would cover all obligations. My town recently cut 2 mass times so it has become a tad harder to find times to go. And I wanted to make sure I could cover both obligations. Thanks for the help.

That is easy. Then you have no obligation to begin with. I know it is too late, but such a question should always be directed at to your priest. I was talking to an older couple who was going out of town and was going to make two Sunday Masses, one on the vigil and one Sunday morning. I knew the answer, but said they should ask the priest. He encouraged them not to worry about making Sunday Mass the next morning, or Christmas eve, but to go see their family in peace.

A priest given a dispensation is always the best option if there is a problem. I can’t make Sunday Mass a lot of times because of work, and the need to sleep. I spoke to the priest and he dispensed me from the obligation.
