Now we have this question at the start of our academic year!

Should we hold an opening of year Mass or prayer service?

A lot of abuses have crept in to Masses held at the start of the acedemic year for students and teachers thanks to our Religious Education department. Most of these have been challenged in a very courteous manner and the department have half heartedly implied that they may consider revising.

The problem now is that, this year, the same department has decidednot to have a Mass but to go to the Church for an opening of year Prayer Service, to include a blessing with the oil of gladness??? Ever hear of this?

I am confused and don’t know which should be offered to the students at the start of the year? I lament the fact that a Mass is not being offered but there again am glad that it will not be a hot bed of abuses.

Just in case your wondering, some of the abuses include holding a dialogue instead of a Gospel reading or a new age feely goodie reading instead of Holy Scriptures, Liturgical dance by scantily clad young ladies etc… In other words think of Cardinal Mahoney’s recent efforts.

Whay think ye?

The bishop needs to be made aware of all these things. You may ask the priest in charge of the school if he has written permission for all these things, but I highly doubt that ANY bishop would give such approval. In which case these abuses should be made known to the bishop.

Blessing with the Oil of Gladness???

Are you sure this is a Roman Catholic school, or have you stumbled across the local druids??? Check first.

If they are indeed Roman Catholic, then I think it’s time to head to the bishop.

I chose “other”

No mass, no prayer service just get on with guitars, drums and a bass. And let’s just ROCK OUT for Jesus.

I’m sure i’ll have many supporters for this.

I voted prayer service (though without the oil thing).

I personally attended two highly abused Masses in the course of five weeks at this school, and I was less-than-amused. I wanted to run up to the “liturgist” screaming, and have an angry mob of Huns following me, dragging the guitarists and drummers, together with their instruments, from the sacred place.

In respect of Iesus I did neither. But I must say I would rather attend a hippie prayer service than see the Mass abused in such vulgar manners.

I guess that I am lucky—I live in a parish with a very good priest & he has very good & reverend masses for the schools in our areas(I was at one for 2 of the schools)–he also celebrated the Mass(maybe with others, I don’t know because I am not part of the school system) for all the teachers in the catholic school system for our diocese—if you have to chose between a mass with many abuses or a prayer service, i feel a mass is always preferable because the mass is much more powerful (even with the abuses) than any prayer service.
