How serious an abuse is it for the priest to allow a relative at a Requiem Mass to read a eulogy after the first reading, then omit the Gospel and only read it after the concluding rights?

Sounds like the priest simply forgot () the gospel, since he did finally do it at the end. Eulogies are not a proper part of the funeral mass.

I don’t know. That is a puzzling question. If it was a Latin Mass, the readings are done in Latin, (and then it is read again in English) . And there is a last Gospel of St. John at the end of the Mass. However, I doubt that a eulogy would be given after the readings. 🤷

Are you sure it was a mass? It sounds like a memorial service.

Easy way to check: was there communion? If not, it wasn’t a Mass. If it was a Mass, it needs a Gospel reading in the correct place and deliberately committing it would be a serious abuse. But if it just happened once, I would guess the priest forgot. If it happens again, its worth having a word with him, its not a trivial matter by any means.

Agree. We do not allow eulogies at our funeral masses, only at the wake service.

I believe one poster got it right; in the TLM Requiem there is no eulogy. I also believe that they are not permitted in the OF Funeral Mass either. Just something that has crept in since 1969.
