Am I to understand that a Mass can be “bought”?
Sorry if that is not what you meant, but giving a small donation sounded odd to me.
No way. In fact at my parish I once got a lecture over the phone when I asked what the suggested donation was for a Mass. Their point was they don’t have any suggestions – give what you can.

On the other hand I once called a high-falootin’ parish a considerable distance from here and asked that a Mass be said for a friend. Before I could ask for a contact name in which to send the stipend, I was curtly told “our minimum donation is $50.00!” I thanked them and suggested they sell the Mass to someone else even though that was the exact amount I had intended to send.

…We have [with permission from the diocese]recently started allowing multiple intentions for a couple of masses each month. Those asking for those masses are aware of the multiple intentions and the extra stipends are [must be] sent to the diocese.
More than 90% of our Masses are offered on behalf of more than one person. While setting-up for Mass if we see arrive who has recently lost a loved-one we will add the name to the person they lost (or even their own) to the Mass intentions.
