Are massages sinful? On an examination of conscience one reflection question was, “have you gone to a massage parlor”?. A little confused about this.

Ironically, I was just talking about the morality of massages at dinner with my family about an hour ago 🧐

I am of the belief and made this point at dinner, that I think there is nothing intrinsically wrong with massages, they aren’t disordered fundamentally. But if they cause you to have impure thoughts then it is a near-occasion of sin

A massage and a massage parlor are not the same thing.

Perhaps you are not familiar with that term, which is referencing an establishment where men obtain illicit sexual favors of various kinds, for money.

Perhaps I read the question too fast, if you are referring to a massage parlor as opposed to just a massage, then yes I think a massage parlor is sinful/unchaste

I don’t think getting a massage is sinful or evil… but some of those “parlors” have a reputation of making the massage not so innocent and therapeutic based.

I always wonder how couples get massages done together. I’d be watching whoever was massaging my partner down like a hawk ! 😂

I don’t understand this. Massage therapy is not in any way sexual. You might as well ask if a prostate exam or a dental check-up is sexual. The registered massage therapists I’ve gone to over the years would slap you across the face faster than you could blink for even the remotest suggestion of such. They go to school, study hard, and take their profession very seriously. As a man, I’ve had both male and female massage therapists…it makes NO difference to me… could be a 75 year old woman, a 20 year old man, a 30 year old woman…makes ZERO difference… the fact that its covered by extended medical coverage in many places should speak volumes.

I used to give my grandma massages. We had a thread a while back where a poster claimed that in “99.9%” of cases, massages are gravely sinful. I was FURIOUS at that poster…
I would be in a lot of constant pain if not for massage therapy.

Twf- Good for you then? Note how I said massage parlors and not simply massages in my original post that you cut apart. And it’s perfectly within my right not to want to witness my partner get rubbed down by someone else.

Um, it’s pretty easy to find a legitimate massage therapist working out of a spa or recommended by your doctor or other health professional. You don’t just walk into a “parlor” to get a legit massage. In a lot of places, there aren’t even “parlors” any more because they have been shut down by the local police. Legit massage therapists would be working out of a high-end spa or a medical office.

Licensed Massage Therapist here…thank you! you are 100% correct…the vast majority of us do take this seriously and absolutely hate that our profession is still associated with sex by some people.

another thank you! I’m female and really appreciate those clients who see me b/c they like my techniques instead of my gender…and there are a lot of people out there who are still very uncomfortable with male therapists.

The only way massage therapy would be sinful is if : 1) you were paying for some sort of “happy ending” which is what that sort of thing is called in this industry or 2) you were getting some sort of New Age energy work (Reiki or therapeutic touch etc…which, if you’re Catholic, is against Church teaching.). The latter is far more common than the former…I know lots of therapists who get into Energy work…I know NO ONE who solicits sex.

Eh, it’s really not weird. A legitimate place isn’t going to try anything sexual, much less with you laying five feet away.

Speaking on behalf of every massage therapist I know (myself included), we all HATE couples’ massages! There is limited room, it gets extra hot, can be awkward having to watch where you are so as to not bump into the other person, you can get distracted by the other people, the other therapist is making faces at you and you have to bite your lip to not laugh…the list goes on…people please, on behalf of us all, let’s put an end to the Couples’ Massage lol!

Well sure, and it’s my right not to watch my wife’s medical exams too… same category to my mind.
I guess it depends what you envision a “couple’s massage” to be - that doesn’t really interest me and would usually be more of a resort / spa thing. My Registered Massage Therapist is a man (as am I) and works in a clinic which also houses doctors, physiotherapists, etc.
