Hello,

I am asking this question on behalf of my boyfriend, who doesn’t want to masturbate, but doesn’t want to have ‘wet dreams’ due to excess semen. Neither us can decide whether masturbating for the purpose of avoiding this would be wrong, as it will not be for sexual pleasure, but it is still masturbation none-the-less.

Hello, cluckcluck.

Although I understand your reasoning, masturbation is an intrinsic grave matter. That means that it doesn’t matter what the end is, it does not justify the means. Even if one was to masturbate out of a wish to avoid “wet dreams” and not for the purpose of sexual pleasure, it is still a grave matter.

Now, due to a lack of full knowledge, if your boyfriend has already done this action for the purpose of avoiding “wet dreams”, while, indeed, it was a grave matter, I would say that it was not mortal sin.

However, now that you are aware that masturbation is always a grave matter no matter what, it would be a mortal sin if it was to done with full consent and knowledge.

Of course, the preferable thing for this sin is to ask a priest about it. While it always objectively grave, there can be certain factors that can reduce culpability: Youth, immaturity, habit, anxiety, etc. A priest will be able to discern the sin with your boyfriend.

Grave matter for mortal sin.

No one may not do this. For no reason may one do so.

“wet dreams” are not sinful. They happen when one is asleep…no sin there. Of course one should not recall them intentionally etc or consent to them if one should wake…etc

Let’s see, can I substitute a mortal sin for a natural bodily function…

Hmmm… Sorry, I don’t get this at all.

This sounds very much like the kind of reasoning I used when trying to devise a way to keep this sin. Tell your boyfriend that if he recognizes this is a sin, he must stop completely. From the sounds of it, he might not say that he is addicted, but chances are this sin has far more control over his life than he realizes.

This sin is very much like a parasite that you don’t notice until you try to remove it. There is no gradually removing it, or only indulging it occasionally. The harder you struggle, the harder it hurts, until you finally kill it and its over. And once you reach that point, he will finally realize how much the parasite was harming him without him even knowing it, and he will feel free for the first time he can remember.

Why is your boyfriend concerned about not having wet dreams?

& as stated before why would one resort to mortal sin to take away a… natural bodily function?
