Masturbation is usually a mortal sin, and so you wouldn’t receive Communion, right?

But what if you’re struggling with impure thoughts when you’re falling asleep (or just waking up), and there is honest doubt about how awake you actually are? And, even though you struggle (as much as possible, given your state of consciousness), the thoughts alone are enough to cause problems. (No physical contact involved, I mean.)

Would something like that exclude you from Communion? (Assuming that you were unable to get to Confession first.)

This subject has been discussed on several threads already. You might want to find those and read them.

The above sounds like my typical daily routine for the last 40 years… You… me and 120,000,000 other american men!
The short answer is to always remember to make an effort to control yourself. It is our struggle!

😃

No deliberate and willful sinful act as far as I can tell. Receive communion in peace, but I would talk to your priest about it in confession.

It sounds like if you are asking you are not at peace about it.

Don’t receive communion you will not be at peace about it. Look at it this way would you want to receive the living god in your hands after you defiled yourself? Christ deserves a clean heart to be received into. Go to confession on Saturday and go to morning mass if you have too.

Oh yeah and I agree that when in doubt talk to a priest. But don’t receive communion with mortal sin on your soul.

My spiritual director told me to always receive Holy Communion because I am struggling with the same thing. Fr said to pray an Act of Contrition beforehand but it is my experience that if I do not receive Holy Communion b/c of this sin then I will commit it many times b/c of depression. Use the strength that Christ gives you in the Eucharist. Go to confession every week and confess too.

Pax Vobiscum

Yeah but with you it is the sin of habit so therefore it may not be mortal.

However, I would agree with you that he should be obedient to his confessor with whatever he is told. If he is told to abstain he should abstain

aye, if his confessor tells him to abstain, abstain.

What I usually/will do is go right after a mass, catch the priest before he leaves and attempt to get a confession, then wait the 45 minutes or so until the next mass starts.

The only time I had a priest turn me down for confession was because it was 5 or less minutes until mass, and he was busy preparing. They want to help you.

Oh! Blech! Not the hands! shudder The tounge, PLEASE!!!

I’d like to ask, could a great anxiety about one’s being in a state of grace be a sign of them being out of it?

Your right my apologies.

Then let me rephrase

Would you want to receive Christ into an unclean heart.

Thanks for all the replies! (I do intend to get to Confession this week, and I will ask about it.)

I don’t know why I never thought to ask before; but I’ve never had a situation like this where I wasn’t able to get to Confession first.
