can a priest refuse absolution with a person who has a big habit masturbating? The person, let’s say, confesses the sin a lot. Can it happen?

Not that I know of, they’ve heard it all before I’m sure. I think they are just happy that you are there and confessing your sins.

I know someone who confesses that sin just about everytime, and I think he has had no trouble getting absolution.

A priest has the power to forgive or retain sin. Usually if the pennitent shows no signs of contrition or it is obvious that the person does not intend to change his/her ways (firm purpose of amendment) then the priest could retain the sin. In most cases the priest will offer absolution especially since this is a very difficult habit to break. It can be done, however and the priest knows that as well…teachccd 🙂

As long as you show repentence and a firm purpose of amendment I don’t think you’ll have a problem. But whatever you do, confess all of your sins in confession, don’t withold sins out of fear of what will happen.

There aren`t many sins a priest would retain, except if they were very serious sins

The gravity of the sin is not a determining factor when a priest decides to retain a sin. A priest will not grant absolution to a person who does not indicate a firm purpose of amendment. For example if a couple is cohabitating and the priest asks the person if he or she intends to move out and the person says no then the sin of fornication may be retained. A person must be willing to go and sin no more…teachccd

Sometime the gravity of the sin is a factor

i think the priest can not refuse this ,for it is his job to make others feel getting rid of sin

Can you give me an example of a sin that is so bad it cannot be forgiven?
Incestuous relations with family members, abortion ETC. I know that any sin can be forgiven, but in cases of incest etc, there MUST be a firm purpose of amendment, as with abortion or the sin can be retained, may have to be brought before the Bishop

Can. 1398 A person who actually procures an abortion incurs a latae sententiae excommunication.

Yes, this must be brought to the Bishop unless a priest is delegated by the Bishop to lift the excommunication. However, in danger of death a priest may absolve any sin regardless of its gravity. Can you give me documentation of where cases if incest cannot be forgiven by a priest? Can you also give me a reference where a firm purpose of amendment is NOT required for any mortal sin?

I am not debating you, I am learning and really appreciate your (name removed by moderator)ut. God bless…teachccd 🙂

Unfortunately, incest is prevalent, if a man goes to confession each week with the sin of incest against his daughter or son, & the priest recognizes him, he should in my opinion retain the sin until this man truly repents of the sin, incest is also criminal, he must stop or the sin should be retained. hypothetical, but also reality. Also the sin of despair, when you think that your sins are greater than God`s mercy is an unforgivable sin

So is murder and many other huge sins. But isn’t that what reconciliation is for? Stealing is also criminal and must be stopped but the priest will forgive you unless you admit to the desire to steal again. Child molestation that does not include incest is also a very serious sin and yet a priest can absolve a person if they have a firm purpose of amendment. Then, in your opinion , is any sin that is repeated in the confessional to be retained? I thought that reconciliation was a sacrament of conversion and part of that conversion is your firm purpose of amendment whereby we continue to go because we are human and continue to fall.

The mere act of going to reconciliation would indicate a faltered “full consent” of the will regarding the sin of despair. Someone who wholeheartedly knows that God could not forgive their sins would not attempt a sacrament of forgiveness.

Again this is just dialogue which exhibits my opinion and not the directives given to priests for their discernment. Each case is individual and should be handled pastorally. God bless you…teachccd

There are certain ones that should be retained, continued child abuse sexually & verbally & physical. In a rage we can commit murder, but to continue to molest your child or any other serious sin against children , if it continues, then it should be retained. Most priests will not retain a sin, I know this. There are also good Catholics who fall in despair because of their past , & even though they expressed sorrow to the God who created us, they cant seem to feel forgiven , so they keep carrying the burden of their sin. It takes all kinds, everyones relationship with God is different, & each priest might tell them a different thing, regarding their sins
