Hi, I’m 16 and I have a big struggle with masturbation. I’d like if you guys could give me advice about what I can do about this issue. and for you to pray for me, I seriously need prayers!!! Thanks 🙂

Lately I’ve been desperately wanting a girl friend and I’m trying to avoid the whole relationship stuff until it really is important (old enough to get married and I mature a little) and because of this it leads me to masturbation.

I usually do it once a day before I go to bed and it’s literally driving me crazy because of how much I hate it. I’ve tried stopping several times before and the longest I’ve ever made it is one week. I’m trying really hard to stop and I think I’m atleast making some progress towards quitting.

If you guys are just going to bombard with prayers to pray I’m not interested, I already know the prayers and which ones to pray and I go to church atleast once or twice a week. I’m not that much into religion I’m more into having a personal relationship with god although I do think religion is important. I just think that all the prayers and rules aren’t nearly as important as knowing god personally.

So if you can help or pray for me please do, thanks.

I’ve had big troubles with this too in my life as I am male. I’m still not perfect but I’m improving and I can’t even really go to confession! ( I’m converting). However, I have been told that confession daily is a good idea for this sin because it creates someone for you to be accountable to that is physically tangible and that is an important thing for our human nature.

You have created an association habit by shaking hands with the monster every time you go to bed. My advice would be to try to sleep on the couch in the living room or somewhere you could EASILY be caught and read instead to go to sleep. Not only will this help you develop a new habit, it is also feels strange to masturbate in a place that is different and new.

The most unfortunate part is that at some point, you have to choose to simply stop and this isn’t easy. It is a battle of will, the will of the flesh and the will of the spirit. The results are worthwhile though because the longer you go with out it, the easier it is not to start back up.

I hope all goes well for you!

Also, just as a side note…rules are important and they help us in our relationship with God.

The doctrinal set that the church has is like a map of how other people have experienced God over the 2K+ years. Now, one could decide to travel the ocean and experience the ocean by sailing across but it would not be very safe or very easy. It is the same with God, He is a vast ocean and the map we use to travel is the tradition we have been given.

Thanks for the advice, I try to go to confession but I’m so embarrassed to confess that sin that it’s really hard for me. I go in thinking that no one else does this or that atleast no one confesses this sin. I also had a really bad experience with a priest one time when when I confessed this sin and he thought I was just absolutely terrible and he couldn’t understand how any one could do such a thing.

also. I don’t masturbate in bed lol. To me that would be gross, I always do it in the shower. Although I appreciate your response to that.

By the way I’m typing on an iPod touch so I’m sorry if something makes no sense

By the way I wasn’t saying rules weren’t important, I think they are very important because without them we wouldn’t have any foundation as Catholics. However if you have no relationship with god and all you do is follow the rules that isn’t going to get you any where. So many people get so caught up in the religion and rules that they don’t actually see god in it and don’t know what it’s like to have a real relationship with god.

Of course I’m only 16 so of course I don’t know as much as others but I can almost immediately tell just by having a conversation with some body if they have a relationship with god or if they just know all the prayers and follow the rules.

The most important thing for you is to maintain a firm will to stop this, no matter what. That’s best accomplished through persistent prayer. Try to find some books on the Catholic teaching of sexuality for teens (I recommend anything by Jason Evert) so you can plant a deep understanding of God’s plan for the human body’ (and why masturbation can never fit into it) that will help you persevere. Keep physically active and get plenty of exercise.
This 1-2-3 plan of praying for willpower, studying for understanding, and exercising for health will nourish your heart, mind and body to fight this sin.

As for the health of your soul, you just need to make a habit of going to confession and receiving the sacrament of reconciliation every time you fall. Find a humble, holy priest who will encourage and keep you accountable and always go to him for confession. The shame you feel is common, in fact this is without a doubt one of the most common sins a priest hears in the confessional. That doesn’t make it any less deadly, but never let your shame keep you away from the healing power of this sacrament. Courage!

This is a war of attrition man, you just have to keep fighting. You might be one of the lucky ones granted a special grace to overcome this, but in the meantime just keep working on making that one week a little longer, until it becomes two weeks, three weeks, a month, three months, six months, a year etc. etc. There will be setbacks, but if you keep fighting and place your trust in God you will win battles for self-mastery, and one day the war will be over.

God bless you!

Oh, and try singing in the shower.

Jesus, our Lords peace be whit You.
I am 50 so I don’t have any urges anymoore, but I have trick that never fails, every time You feel that You “need” to masturbate, pick up Your rosary,You don’t even have to pray,if You don’t want to,just keep it in Your hands. Works every time.

Put the thought in your head that the next time you do it your going to be condemned.

OR - The fun way!
Each time you get the urge, load up youtube and type in badger song! 😃
:extrahappy::extrahappy:
Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger MUSHROOM MUSHROOM, Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger Badger MUSHROOM MUSHROOM!

Also, try pray the rosary atleast twice a week. That’s what I attempt. It can help quite a bit.

Hmm Totterman’s suggestion is actually very good. I have another, which can be used instead or in addition to Totterman’s suggestion (in addition to is most advisable): get a 2-inch St. Benedict crucifix (The one with the medal in it). You can find one cheaply at most Catholic shops --I got mine from a small shop in my hometown for $5. Wear this. All the time. The St. Benedict medal
is a prayer of exorcism against Satan, a prayer for strength in time of temptation, a prayer for peace among ourselves and among the nations of the world, a prayer that the Cross of Christ be our light and guide, a prayer of firm rejection of all that is evil, a prayer of petition that we may with Christian courage “walk in God’s ways, with the Gospel as our guide,” as St. Benedict urges us.
This came from this site: osb.org/gen/medal.html. It is not a prayer that you say, so much as live. I too have had problems with masturbation. The St. Benedict crucifix has helped greatly in my case. If you cannot wear it and go to sleep, keep it on until you are ready to go to bed, and hang it near your bed (I usually put mine on the neck of a lamp beside my bed) so that if you are tempted during the night, you can grab hold of it easily. If you do not want to wear the crucifix outside your clothes (When I am in a state of mortal sin, I do not have the crucifix visible to others), it can be worn beneath your shirt. Even if you do not believe or want to pray the prayers of exorcism engraved on the medal, wearing it should help (two inches makes you notice it on yourself easily). By wearing the crucifix, you are reminded of your rightful dignity and duty as a Christian, especially a Catholic Christian. I would also like to say that, even though cheap, a St. Benedict crucifix is a beautiful sacramental, and they are generally very detailed, especially in comparison to crucifixes at its price range or a bit above.
I would also like to extend what has helped me: go to confession. If you have to make the priest head to the confessional whenever he sees you because of how much you take advantage of the sacrament (true story).

It’s great to see that you are into your personal relationship with God. This (relationship) may be the way to help your situation. Jesus clams that if we have faith the size of a pea we can move mountains (or stop unwanted behavior). Prayers and religion, the things you are not into would seem to be the best way to acomplish this as you can not be closer to someone than to take thier body and blood into yours or to confess this sin to God himself with humility (humility being in the presence of another person [priest~find one your comfortable with]). A five min. shower should get you clean, a strong relationship with Jesus our Lord and savior will keep you clean. Yes it,s easyer said than done and my prayers are with you my friend !
