Like many people, I have been struggling with the sin of masturbation…and I don’t know. Something slipped. Now…I didn’t do what you’re thinking. The definition from the Catechism: “By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure.” I…didn’t really deliberately stimulate it. I didn’t even touch it. I didn’t think about anything (meaning lust, or anything of the like.) I did…pull-ups.
Now this may sound VERY strange to you if you’ve never heard of it…But…Take a look

I didn’t do yoga…I did pull ups. And it happened. I don’t even know what to think about this…There aren’t any sites in the 60 pages of Google I looked at that talked about it and Catholicism. So I don’t know whether it was a mortal sin or not.

Are there any opinions, ideas…anything?

CatholicKid1993,

You put a clickable link in you first post.

I’m certainly not going to touch it.

(If you look at the URL, it clearly was a safe link.)

But whether that was what you had or not, it doesn’t matter. Did you set out to masturbate? Did you continue doing whatever you were doing after you realized what was happening? Did you ever intend to masturbate?

If not, then you did not sin at all, let alone did not mortally sin.

The way it sounds to me, you didn’t do it intentionally.

But…I did. <=( I just…didn’t think it was since I wasn’t deliberately stimulating it…I was just…deliberately doing the pull-ups…

And yes, it’s a safe link. I hope you all believe me about that, I need all the help I can get…

I think this is way more information than I really need about your solo sex life.

Honestly.

It’s a private matter that should be dealt with in the confessional. Spare us the details.

Okay, this did not help my situation at all.

Mortal sin is a SERIOUS MATTER. Not to be taken lightly or as a joke. I’m not posting this to be crude or weird. A sin is a sin, whether it has to do with drugs, stealing, or sex. You need to grow up. And I’M the young one here.

I’ve heard of this happening before, but I’m not sure what causes it. Okay so you doing pull ups and it just happened. Right? Were you using pull ups as method of stimulation by chance once you started feel something? Or did it happen so fast that you couldn’t do anything about it.

I think this answers my question…Unfortunately. 😊

I was doing the pull-ups because I knew it would happen…I just didn’t think that was masturbation…Does that somehow go with the definition provided in the Catechism?

If it does, then…I guess I’m going to Confession tomorrow. 😦

Regardless I would suggest you go to confession and tell the Priest the whole situation just to safe. Plus it’s good to confess the others sins too.

However, if you did not fully know what you were doing was grave matter I do not believe that would constitute a mortal sin. To me it sounds like you did not have full knowledge of that what you were doing was grave matter at time it occured.

See… the title of your post and the preliminary explanation you gave are misleading. You want everyone to say, “Nah, kid! It’s okay, not your fault, etc.” so you can go about your merry way doing pull-ups on purpose. 😛

If poking yourself repeatedly in the forehead with a crowbar causes you to ejaculate, and you know it and do it anyway, it’s the mortal sin of masturbation.

Go to Confession, silly. You know better.

HAHA! I LOVE this post!!!

And yeah, you’re so right too. Not about wanting everyone to say a certain thing…I actually wasn’t sure. But you were right about me knowing deep inside that it was just as wrong. So I went to confession already yesterday. And I haven’t poked myself in the forehead since. 😉

Im sorry…is this intended to be a joke by the OP? As a former college athlete and someone who did military PFT’s, I used to do a ton of pull ups…however, they only caused me physical pain…as it did with all my buddies who did them as well…I don’t think I have ever heard of anyone deriving satisfaction or stimulating pleasure from them…unless the OP is talking about some form of pull ups I have never heard of before…this is just a strange post:shrug:

I can’t even imagine how doing pull ups would cause it to happen…and I don’t want to know. But to answer the concern of the OP, I’m in no position to say whether what you did is a mortal sin…but if you knew that what you were doing would produce the result you were aiming for, then yes it was masturbation. As SophiaLector inferred, it doesn’t matter how you do it if it accomplishes what you want it to accomplish. If you want to kill someone, but you don’t want to pull the trigger, does it make a difference if you rig the gun to fire automatically when the person crosses a trip wire?

Just go to confession and talk to the priest.

Probably one of the most hilarious threads I’ve ever seen. Can anyone even conceive of a God who cares about such frivolous things! Good God!

Boy does yoga stretch to achieve orgasm
Burns eternally in hellfire for lack of repentence

For the love of all that is reasonable and sane, can anybody see the foolishness of it all? I can see God being beyond our ability to conceive his methods and ways, but a God which confounds our very idea of morality and justice blows me away (no pun).

Hi! I will like to comment on this issue and hopefully will make you understand that what you are going through is not a serious problem. I do not know your age or the ages of the rest but I like to make some comments to put your consciences at ease. Let me tell you first that I am Greek Orthodox. My Church also has teachings regarding sin and especially sexual sins. We have confession also and in some way we are identical in our sacramental way of life, I mean both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Masturbation is not a serious affair. Please be at ease, this condition does not warrant to be serious sin. I believe the Catholic Church at one time believed that by wasting the seed it was a serious sin. But in reality you are wasting to what! You cannot be wasting the seed if you are not with another person. It will be a more serious affair if you had slept with a girl before marriage or a married man engaging in masturbation instead of been with his wife. The Orthodox Church does not consider masturbation a motal sin among the youth. A married man , yes, because he should be loving his wife, but not among the youth. If you commit it our priests recommend to pray and most cases to pray for 5 to 10 minutes. It is not that serious. You are young I believe. There is pressure living in this world. God understands that. He understands you. Mayby the masturbation can be a release from all that pressure the world give to us. And by the way with that pressure gone so will the temptation to sleep with a girl before marriage. Let me tell you a story that may help. Two boys come to a priest and ask " Father is it a mortal sin to masturbate ". " Yes “, says the priest. " How about engaging in premarital sex .” " Yes " says the priest. Now what do you think. Since masturbation is a mortal sin I might as well engage in premarital sex. It is the same thing. But you see it is not. Masturbation is not a serious affair especially among the youth. Do not tortue yourself. Find yourself an understanding priest. He will help and guide you through. It is not necessary for you to go to confession everytime you commit it. Pray to Our Lord Jesus for 5 to 10 minutes. The masturbation if it is a sin will only be venial and especially venial in the youth. All venial sin is forgiven at Communion. All that is necessary for you is to pray at the time you had commit it. And when you go to your monthly confession bring it up then. The Catholic Church is now more understanding on this issue. The Catechism on this has a additional part in its second or revised edition which I believe makes the youth not as responsible. Be at ease. You are growing to be a mature young man and God understands all the pressures young people must go through before they can obtain adult maturity. I hope my comments were helpful and please bring your concerns to your priest too. God Bless!

Part of being a teenager, male or female, is totally unexpected sexual stimulation in totally NON-sexual situtations.

Some can get a warm feeling from simply taking a bouncy bus ride.

It’s part of the job description of being a teen.

Don’t worry. You’ll grow out of it.

Is it remotely possible for an agnostic to come to a forum devoted to Catholicism and post with a little more respect? Why do you feel the need to hurl insults? Do you somehow live to do that, as if your very soul is nourished by unleasing venomous attacks on others? Does it give you great pleasure to demean others?

You need to grow up. If you don’t accept Catholic beliefs, at least have the common decency to respect them when you come to a Catholic website. I’m amazed the moderating staff here allows you to continue posting the things that you do. It is incredibly disheartening to me.

I swear to you, it’s not a joke! I wouldn’t joke about something like mortal sin! Seriously…Look at the link, or Google what you see in the link. You’ll see that it’s no hoax.

I don’t know. I kind of disagree. I mean, nearly EVERYONE struggles with this from time to time. Those that don’t struggle just don’t know it’s a mortal sin. I actually think that it is kind of foolish for us to be so concerned over it, when there are so many worse things happening in the world.

I’m not trying to turn you all or myself away from our beliefs, but I’m just saying.

But I did go to confession. Because I knew that it was wrong. And masturbation…
