Hello,

I am a married practicing catholic male and sometimes during sleep i do get arousal’s and succumb to masturbation, but most of the time it happens unconsciously or in a state of semi awareness. Can this be considered a mortal sin as i don’t do it purposefully? Can i receive the Holy communion in such a state?

“Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action” (CCC# 2352). Whatever the motive, solitary sex in itself contradicts the meaning of human sexuality, which is meant by God to be shared between a man and a woman in marriage.

You ask if masturbation is viewed as a mortal or venial sin. Remember, that for a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met. It has to be a very serious and grave matter, which is committed with full knowledge and with deliberate consent. What we are saying is that for it to be mortal sin, it would have to be done deliberately, knowing that it is not what God wishes for us and without any regard for that. In order to judge the morality of a human act, certain conditions have to be considered. The Church recognizes, for example, that in the practice of masturbation, psychological factors including adolescent immaturity, lack of psychological balance, and even ingrained habit can influence a person’s behavior, and this could lessen or even eliminate moral responsibility.

The condition that many persons claim for their innocence regarding masturbation is habit, and we certainly know how difficult habits are to break. We must keep in mind, however, that habit does not completely destroy the voluntary nature of our acts. As Christians who are going to be held accountable for our actions, we must strive to unite ourselves to the Lord and, therefore, do all we can to curb or eliminate all habits that detach us from Him. So, if a person is masturbating and knows fully that it is wrong, and does it willingly without doing anything to resist, then he or she is guilty of grave sin.

If they are in doubt about the morality of any sexual activity, a person should talk to his or her confessor, a priest. After listening to all of the circumstances and conditions surrounding an individual’s actions, he will make a judgment and give the proper guidance. Sometimes, professional help will have to be sought. But we should be careful with this because some professionals will actually encourage masturbation, and this would be wrong. God knows that we will sometimes fail, but He does expect us to do our best to live according to His ways. He knows when we have done all we can to resist sin. If we have done that and have acknowledged and confessed our sin, then we can rest in the knowledge that we have done our best, and that He will forgive us.

Since you said you are doing it when you are asleep or not fully Conscience then you are not fully aware of it. What do you feel when you are fully awake? Do you like it or completely rejecte it? That’s why I highly recommend speaking about this with your confesser. I realize it is hard and awkward but only he can give you an answer that’ll give you a peace of mind.

I’d recommend you to pray a lot and hard and beg Jesus to take this away from you. Everytime you wake up in this situation, engage in prayer right away, pray to St. Michael and your Guardian Angel, pray the Rosary, and with Jesus about your problem and ask him to help you overcome it. Keep praying and meditating even for an hour everytime it happens. I know that by prayer we can accomplish anything.

Peace.

A ‘nocturnal emission’ , as long as it’s not consciously done, was never considered a sin.

If the dream images are still in your head at Mass, I would not receive communion. Wait until next week!

My understanding is that such is completely involuntary and involves no manual stimulation whatsoever.

I would discuss this with a priest, because I think you can get into an area where you’re excusing situations where you actually have more control than you think. When asleep, it’s usually difficult to move much (sleep paralysis), though we do occasionally partially wake up to roll over, adjust a blanket, etc. Actually masturbating during sleep would seem more to me to be like sleepwalking, which would be rare. Having sexual dreams is not a sin at all.

Having spent some time in my youth with mind altering substances, I can honestly say that being in a state of nearly asleep is as mind altering as it gets. Doing something in such a state is not something I would consider any kind of sin.

Definitely not a mortal sin, and you can still receive communion.

You’re not alone either my friend. Masturbation and ejaculation while sleeping are very common symptoms among Christian males who are battling the sin of fornication. It seems to be a natural way of your body/mind responding to a sudden lack of the stimulation you previously made a habit of. Don’t be discouraged.

Even priests have nocturnal emissions, since they are celibate. It’s as natural as a woman’s monthly period.
