Masturbation is wrong, but eating ice cream is okay?

Apart from the defience of Gd by Adam and Eve, Masturbation is the oldest sin listed in the bible. A man named Onan was having intercourse with his wife (?) and practiced coitus interuptus and “spilled his seed on the ground”, for which Gd struck him dead.
Ever since, masturbation has been considered “the sin of Onan” or Onanism.
How that could possibly equate with ice cream or other so-called pleasures absolutely boggles the imagination!
If you are going to debate something, be serious and spare us from such trivial sophomoric idiocies!
Like it or not, there is absolutely no excuse for masturbation, and all the excuses about raging adolescent hormones and “its normal because everyone does it” are nothing more than cop-outs that have no basis in morality.
G*d and Mother Church expects us to have a little more gumption and fortitude than that.
I agree.
Food/drink can be consumed for pleasure. And sex is pleasurable as well. Both are to be pleasurable in their proper context. Masturbation and gluttony are totally different though.
Masturbation is ALWAYS a mortal sin…gluttony is not necessarily always mortal.

This is not a particularly good comparison and does seem like an interesting way to merely justify an unacceptable sin.

The sins are very different in type:

Masturbation is a categorical sin. It is always wrong. There is no need to masturbate and there is no biological purpose served in it (putting aside the debatable claims of health benefits to masturbation). As noted earlier, sex is for unity and procreation, and masturbation serves neither purpose.

Gluttony is a sin of degree. Eating/drinking are perfectly acceptable; it is only when done in excess that they can become sinful. We need to eat and drink. Even ice cream (contributing fats and sugar) and soda (sugar, hydration) offer some nurtition. In the western world, such nutrition is often in excess to what we otherwise consume, but offer such foods in developing countries and they’ll be gladly received, where pure calorie intake is very important. As noted, it is temperance that helps us avoid eating/drinking from becoming potentially sinful activities. It may sometimes be hard to know where to draw the line…I’m sure many of us carry a few extra KGs/pounds than we should…but it’s an entirely different matter to masturbation, where the line is clearly draw at “don’t do it”.

So ice cream (beer, wine, chocolate, soda, etc) in moderation, as part of a healthy diet, is fine. Masturbation in moderation is inherently wrong.

The better analogy might be between masturbation and artificial sweeteners, which serve no nutirtional purpose. Yet even artificial sweeteners are usually taken in the context of other nutritional food - eg diet soda still offers hydration. So perhaps, as others have noted, the best analogy is between masturbation and the Roman purge - throwing up to avoid the nutritional effects of the food consumed and to indulge further in their pleasure, removed from consequences. Hopefully it’s clear enough that this is disordered?

A much better analogy is between masturbation and the eating disorder called bulimia.

In both cases there is no acceptance whatsoever of the real purpose of the act, and participation in the act is only for the sole purpose of pleasure.

Bullimia is a little diffirent in that it’s a serious illness. The Roman purge, on the other hand, was very deliberate and intentionally separated pleasure from its consequences. Bullimics may lack such a deliberate approach to their eating habits…although we can stretch this analogy to a person with a masturbation habit that they wish they were not encumbered with. So, yes, in that regard it is a good analogy!

Eating ice cream does not cause lust.

Eating ice cream is okay if you do it only sometimes. If you did it alot, I assume it would lead to gluttony, and that goes for any food.

Don’t eat till you’re full up so much that you have to take your belt off. Eat till you’re satisfied.
Its best to eat small meals through the day than one large one. Of course not everyone will be able to. They have snacks you can buy at the store. Like eating an apple or a few carrots.

In the natural and supranatural marriage between wife and spouse and in the context of marital act, the sexual pleasures [mutual and reciprocal pleasures], the sexual orgasms [orgasm of husband and the orgasms of wife, mutual and reciprocal orgasms], the sexual enjoyments [mutual and reciprocal enjoyments] are natural, good, beautiful, useful, holy and wanted by God. Per se, in this context, they are totally normal and moral.

The sexual conjugal pleasure in itself is not sinful. Each spouse has the right and thus the obligation, in the context of marital act, to give sexual pleasures, the sexual orgasms, the sexual enjoyments to the other spouse and to receive the sexual pleasures, the sexual orgasms, the sexual enjoyments from the other.

I came across something a while ago which got me thinking and a bit puzzled as to whether in this situation the MB would be a mortal sin. Apparently years ago (maybe 50 years ago) I heard of a situation where women in labour were encouraged to MB to avert the intensity of the labour pains as there was no analgesic available. Therefore the big O, reduced the intensity of the labour pains making it more bearable and encouraged by the midwives attending. Now, what can we make of that? Certainly not, I would think, a mortal sin committed by the labourer…?
