Masturbation....Or not?

I understand your urge to do this, i suffer the same way. However for a different reason. I do not think it is a sin (maybe my type of Christianity) but in todays world. I think God understands that every other boy, lad, girl, dude, shelah does do this a lot. So he understands you. It’s a lot easier to masterbate now than it was 2000 years ago when these laws were made
 
Why is masturbation such a “sin”? Why is it “impure”? There are species of animals that masturbate, so should you go out and eradicate them for offending your religious beliefs?

There are also species of animals that eat their young…Should I have devoured one of my three kids?

Well that’s a good question. If the Catholic teaching were driving us to committing evil, then it would be a problem.

But the teaching that masturbation is wrong won’t lead us to evil. The worst it can do is make us give up something pleasurable “for God”. I doubt that will lead us to perdition. God may in fact be pleased at our efforts towards obedience, in His name, even if it isn’t something He mandated in the first place. As long as what we are trying to “obey” isn’t an offense against His commandments (like killing for instance).

The risk is more on those with the less restrictive teaching. What if they are wrong?

It probably has little bearing on those receiving the teaching for they would have been duped into error and God is merciful. But the teachers may be in serious trouble.

It really boils down to a variation on Pascal’s Wager.

By that very logic, should we all not switch back to eating Kosher and perhaps Islamic standards of dress? I mean, what if we’re wrong?

If it contradicts dogmatic Church teaching, then yes.

So? There’s nothing wrong with being close-minded. Truth and obedience to God are what matter, not a self-important, phony label.

You criticized those who disagree with Church teaching for failing to be open minded, which is a strange criticism when you claim close-mindedness is just dandy.

I criticize those who disagree with Church teaching for not assenting to the truth, not for refusing to be “open-minded”. Being open to the truth is a different thing than being “open-minded”, which is usually taken to mean accepting of everything except absolute moral standards - moral relativism, if you will.

Second of all-
Obviously this us going to be a caricature, and hence not a completely fair representation, but this is how I envision this view point playing out-

Guy- Alright, I think I’ve done a lot of thinking, praying, and bible reading and I think I’ve got a pretty good sense of morality hammered out.
Lycorth- Let me see that… oh no, this is all wrong. Here, you should listen to these guys they’re the best at this stuff.
Guy- Hmm? I dunno, I can’t say I agree with all of their arguments…
Lycorth- Does it matter what you think? These guys are always right when it comes to this stuff!
Guy- Always right? I don’t think I believe that.
Lycorth- Pssh, you’re just not being open to the truth.
Guy- How do I know this stuff is the truth?
Lycorth- Because these guys are always right!
