is “flexing” your genitals when you have an (non-induced) erection considered masturbation?

If done for the purpose of self-stimulation then I would say yes.

From a male’s perspective, I would say probably not because those flexes can be almost as involuntary as, e.g., morning erections.

I recently introduced a non-Catholic friend of mine to the CAF (she is currently not practicing any religion but is interested in Catholicism.) I warned her that there are occasionally some rather “nutty” posts - especially where sexuality is concerned. I’m going to send her a link to this thread. She’d never believe it if I just told her about it.

Haha, you’re quite right. I am glad I didn’t read this particular forum before coming back to the Church some 14 years ago. That would have scared me away for good!!!

CCC 2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. “Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.” “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of “the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved.”
To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.

Let’s put aside the question of the sinfulness of masturbation and just say that 99.999 percent of all males in their teen years or older, regularly or semi-regularly masturbate. (That is, if they’re not sexually active with a partner.)

Any male who denies this is lying.

If its 99.999 percent then that means there is 0.001 percent who would not be lying if they said that which contradicts your statement that ANY male who denies this is lying!!!

If you are doing it to get off or add sexual thoughts to it, it seems a lot like masturbation. But Sometimes this can just be a stretch, like yawning.

You’re splitting hairs and intentionally missing the point.

Let me be plain and literal so you can not obfuscate:

I assert that many holy rollers who decry masturbation when others do it, themselves mastubate in their beds, in the showers and wherever else.

The thing is, disavowing it between episodes is a lot like me disavowing gluttony between pieces of chocolate cake.

Why are you so uptight? The Church is full of sinners and it doesn’t matter what the sin is. If its mortal and the person dies unrepentant they go to Hell.

I’m not sure it’s accurate to say I’m uptight though I concede I’m a bit testy. To be honest, I don’t think I’m truly responding to the discussion in this thread. I think the prissiness of some people in ANOTHER thread is tainting my reaction here.

I therefore yield and apologize.

The Catholic Church teaches us that intentional acts done for the purpose of pleasure are mortal sins. People who do such things can risk going to Hell!

One of the more honest and sincere posts I’ve seen in these forums in a long time. I am blessed.

Merry ChristMass to all.

Can be mortal sins. Not are. Three conditions for mortal sin: grave matter, full knowledge, and full consent.

That said, does your observation include sneaking a chocolate that I don’t really need for nutrition, and which as a pre-diabetic probably isn’t a good idea either? 😉

I won’t deny that many young men do this, maybe regularly or semi-regularly; but please do not speak for me, as I do not. It is sinful; many are free of this sin. Now you can say I am being untruthful, but you would be wrong and not to mention judgmental and prejudice.

Don’t try to bring others down with you so you feel better, this is know as detraction, and also a sin.

You can overcome this sin of the flesh, but first off one must want to please God, not yourself.

This is not accurate. People who masturbate do it because it is pleasurable, but that is not the reason it is sinful. It is sinful because it perverts the sexual act.

I do things because they’re pleasurable all the time. Reading, listening to music, watching TV. Eating and drinking can be pleasurable - especially around the holidays! I do all of these things with deliberate intent, and yet they are not mortal sins. Are there ways I could abuse these things that could make them mortal sins? Probably. But the mere fact that they are pleasurable does not make them sinful.

I don’t experience this as I am married to a wonderful, beautiful woman. My original comment was about unwed men.

I have to say that although I have many sins masturbation is not one of them. And I am an unmarried man. I have been “clean” for many years by the grace of God. If I can do it any unmarried man can and I am sure I am not in such an exclusive club as your estimate suggests.
