Dear JFJK, if you’re in doubt go to confession. Confession will help you gather the strength to overcome your own weakness. When we find ourselves trying to justify our behavior when God knows exactly our motivations, that’s a red alarm that our spirit is being weak.

I struggled with masturbation for many years, I’m talking like since I was a kid until I was an adult in my mid 20’s. Once I learned the purpose of my sexuality, not to escape stress, boredom or just give me few minutes of pleasure, I renounced masturbation. Every day I would make the decision not to masturbate, one day at a time. It was not easy, I had to break an acquired habit of many years. But God saw my struggle and the intention of my heart and gave me the strength, healed my heart and it’s been now over a decade since my last time.

Please show up few minutes before Mass and go to confession. I have been there done that and it’s not a nice place to be. Those saying in this forum that is natural and advisable are talking like “people of the flesh” that deny there are spiritual realities against which we must fight with all our powers and might.

Keep up with the good fight, go frequently to the sacraments and avoid the occasions that you know will put you to the test. God will help you. Just let him do his work in your life.

Masturbation is bad because it’s a gateway into a life that only consumes more and more about sex, impure thoughts, impure actions and ultimately bring you down to a point where you have a very hard time controlling your sexual desires and fantasies which are in direct opposition to the teachings of the Catholic faith. Yes there will be times where you fail and give into those temptations. The human element to a Catholic sometimes over powers the strongest of us. God will not condemn you to hell for it IF you make an honest heartfelt confession and receive his merciful healing.

I’m not saying just give in to the desires. I am saying to limit your exposure to those things that makes you have those feelings and those desires. Complete avoidance in this world isn’t possible. There are numerous ways people get tempted anymore: magazines (not necessarily the skin mags), tv, movies, world settings, internet (Facebook especially), and others. You just have to do the best you can and when you feel you are slipping into that mindset ask God to help your and remvoe yourself from those situations. It does help, I know. I’ve been there and at times still there but I have asked for, prayed for and receiving the help from God to make me a better person and remove those temptations from me. he’s a merciful God and will never let his children stray if we seek his help with fervent and sincere prayers to him.

I have come across some young men…and girls that have talked about this very thing and I have recommended some light reading for them that puts our sexuality into perspective.

Get the book, “Theology of the Body” by Christopher West (he has written many books on this subject that might also be of help). This book is the teaching of Pope JPII. He was a fabulous teacher although sometimes a little hard to read so Christopher West took that teaching and put into a book that’s easy to read and has been the cornerstone for teaching teens about their sexuality. It will address all the questions you have and will give you a well rounded and true foundation on which to grow in your sexuality. You will understand what God truly has in store for you!

Please do this. You can order the book from CA or…your parish library may have a copy that you can take home and read!

Of all the sins that I have committed, masturbation is the one that I’m most sorry for!

Thanks to God for Paxil, a medication that drastically reduced my sex drive to a manageable level.

Were you being treated for anxiety disorder and this helped you manage the masturbation spells? Are you saying that a doctor prescribed you a medicine to help you quit masturbation? Or are you just being sarcastic? Sorry, but I don’t get the point of your comment. Please clarify.

I take Paxil for depression and anxiety, but the side effect is that it greatly reduces the libido. Doctors are able to prescribe Paxil for a number of symptoms, including the reduction of the libido.
 
I suppose many thought this thread was dead by now. I must tell you I found this yesterday by searching google why the church says masturbation is a sin. It came up in the homily of all places at our parish this last weekend and my wife asked why it was wrong. I told her I’d find out, so here I am. I’m in RCIA and my wife is my sponsor so I can now tell here what she needs to tell me :). As long as I’m here I feel I should tell my story. I’ve masturbated more than I care to admit. Even before joining the Church I felt in my heart it was wrong. For me I can not do it with out lusting after someone - even my own flesh - we are a very perverted species aren’t we. I even try to justify doing it by saying to myself that it helps my prostate - which it does but so does having sex with my wife. Anyway, I strongly agree with all who have said this activity eventually pulls you in deeper to other sins - porn, lust, self love, and on and on. I think some of what troubles many when it come to a seemingly harmless issue like this is submitting ourselves to the authority of the Church. I came into the Church because I finally realized after many years of fighting it that the Church does and should have authority over me as a follower of Christ - you won’t find this authority anywhere else. I guess if you can’t trust 2000 plus years of wisdom and Tradition then maybe masturbation really isn’t your problem after all. Pray to the Lord our God for wisdom and it will come - I guess you need to ask if you want to learn it the hard way or God’s way.

I agree with all you have said. In limiting situations that lead to sex. The only reason why I occasionally commit this sin ( and I do go to confession and struggle with this too) is a problem with nocturnal emmission. I have found that masterbation greatly reduces this to nothing sometimes with paxil. Btw if someone is having trouble and searching for help can this be reduced to a venial sin so one can take the sacrament?

OH Nonsense… Masturbation is biologically normal and Jesus wold be ashamed of all of these people that are trying to stigmatize you over such a normal activity. This is an excerpt of religious nonsense of people talking beyond their own capacity to deliver. Masturbation is like scratching an itch. Just because some of these people do not have the self acceptance that one should have, do not allow them to stigmatize you. God loves you for you. PERIOD!
 
Let’s say a male has an urge for sex. And so he executes this sexual urge on another male. This is called the sin of homosexuality condemed by the bible many times over.

Another male has an urge for sex. He executes this sexual urge on himself, a male.
A male executing sex on a male. Looks like a duck.

In sanctifing grace, the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit so says the bible.
Is this type of sex treating the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit?

Just some thoughts.

Unfortunately, your conception of Jesus is skewed. May I suggest you actually read the Gospels to gain a clear understanding of the Person of Jesus and His teachings. For example:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultry.’ But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already **committed adultry **with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and thrown it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.” - Mt 5:27-30.

Given the context of the passage, it seems pretty clear what Jesus is referring to in this teaching. So the question is whether you will accept the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels (Divine Revelation) or maintain the image of Jesus you have created to reflect your own beliefs…

Yes, Jesus loves us. However, true love means actively willing the best for the beloved. If we are doing something harmful to ourselves and our relationship with God, then true love will correct us.
