can masturbation without impure thoughts a mortal sin?
No. I don’t know why people would think divorcing sexual pleasure from even the idea of an interpersonal communion would be more moral than an imaginary one. Masturbation is wrong because it turns us inward. Sexual pleasure is designed to help us bond with our spouse, to foster our relationship and thus to assist us in working together to care for the fruits of our sexual union. When we pursue sexually pleasure inwardly (lustfully), it has the opposite effect.

That said, the clear answer the Church gives is that masturbation is morally evil. Beyond that, I’d say people’s interpretations of the “why” differ because we’re all students. We’re all reading the same Catecheism and trying to understand it. Its very easy to get a wrong or incomplete understanding. We’re not saints yet. As such what you will find is a universal condemnation, very abstract brief explainations from the Catecheism that can be as easily misinterpretted by the laity as the bible. Start with the basis, seek counsel, keep reading, but be willing to accept things before you have a complete understanding of the why.

There is no such thing as masturbation without impure thoughts.
Anyone who tells you that is likely trying to justfy sinning.
What if it to gain relief for sexual pressure that builds over time? What if it is brought on by hormones and not lustful thoughts? I am not saying that having lustful thoughts or doing it for pleasure is not a sin, but what if it is not for pleasure but for relief, the way you relieve a stiff neck? What if having the pressure actually causes lustful thoughts? What if the pressure causes you to become irritable and restless and unable to relax or sleep? What if you have a spouse that is medically unavailable and therefore, marital sex if not an option? Is it still a mortal sin? What if you pray and pray and pray for the lord to take away the feeling and it still does not depart? What if masturbation is the only way to get relief—relief, not lustful pleasure?

Sexual “release” is not required to live. Therefore masturbation is not required. The act of masturbation is an intrinsic evil. Doing it is a sin involving grave matter. None of the circumstance change this. Whether there lust, or not, is irrelevant. The act is still gravely sinful. Whether is mortal depends on the factors of knowledge and consent.
