Masturbation...yet again

With all due respect I really feel that the advice for the poster is to consult his doctor to understand his normal healthy ‘predicament’ - this should really not be considered in terms of a persons religious beliefs. An impressionable person may read these posts and get the total wrong idea about his body. Religious teachings are not the best place to seek advice on understanding the simple functions of the human body. Masturbation is normal. I say that as someone raised a catholic and does not need to contradict one’s catholic beliefs.
This addresses some of the health concerns and is quite easy to read.
I think you would like this.

I enjoyed reading the article but it only gives a narrow viewpoint and does not offer up other alternatives for the poster to consider - it was well written but did not offer the opposing view to the catholic churches view and in that respect does not offer a completely honest picture

C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

“For me the real evil of masturbation would be that it takes an appetite which, in lawful use, leads the individual out of himself to complete (and correct) his own personality in that of another (and finally in children and even grandchildren) and turns it back, sends it back into the prison of himself, there to keep a harem of imaginary brides. And this harem, once admitted, works against his ever getting out and really uniting with a real woman. For the harem is always accessible, always subservient, calls for no sacrifices or adjustments, and can be endowed with erotic and psychological attractions which no real woman can rival .”

Just another thought.
I think the thing with masturbation myself is that we should be striving to become something more than an animal with animal instincts. In considering this thread IMO animals will act out and especially if the males haven’t been neutered (cats and dogs) will “hump” things. This may be normal. Masturbation may be normal outside of the eyes of the church but you have to control and redirect the sex force and it will bring you closer to god. In yogic terms the sex force rises and moves up the “spine” or channel. Most religions teach no promiscuity.

You keep making the claim the it’s is normal. You have yet get any evidence that it is right rather the wrong. Normal does not, in and of itself, define what is right.

I can’t show you that breathing in and out is normal or eating or going to to sleep is normal. The question should really be the other way round and be asked, why is homosexuality considered different from any other ‘normal’ human activity.

Why do catholics zoom in on that and not hat wearing, or eating french fries, what is the fascination with human homosexual activity. Homosexuality can’t be wrong for the same reqason as breathing can’t be wrong.

AF I suppose it keeps coming back to what a previous poster quoted from CS Lewis - the danger of Solipsism.

The most meaningful human acts seem to involve a higher social layering/trajector that goes beyond the mere anatomical, physiological “elements” integrated by these meaningful interactions and symbolisations.

Sexuality, of all human activities, appears to be the most manifestly relational. When that relational reality is lost sight of in the way we pursue sexual “action” … we become so individualistic and fragmented in the social order that healthy social cohesion and order becomes increasingly impossible for us as individuals and communities. Happiness and eventually life itself becomes increasingly tenuous as it becomes increasingly difficult for large numbers of sollipsistic individuals to live together and “get along.”

The Solipsistic mentality is a danger of course not limited to the normalisers of masturbation. The same can be said of any pleasure, material or spiritual, that is excessively sought regardless of others.

Yes, restraint may be very difficult. No-one said life could be lived without difficulty. But some difficulties it seems are like the Hydra, others are not.

Actually, if you had proper understanding what human nature truely is, you could put together a valid and sound logical argument that would demonstrate the rightness of breathing, eating and sleeping, as well as the wrongness of holding your breath in some particular circumstance, or overeating or sleep disorders.

This is off-topic red=herring.
