Is masturbation a mortal sin? If not, must you go to confession before receiving communion?

Masturbation is a serious sin. If it is mortal or not is between you and your confessor (did you have knowledge it was serious sin and did you consent to do it?)

**Welcome to CAF!! **You will see that this topic comes up a lot here since so many struggle with it. Masturbation is serious matter and can be a mortal sin. As the previous poster noted, you should go to confession and have a priest guide you with this. Usually, and I say usually, when a person asks this question it is not a mortal sin since it shows a lack of knowledge. But it’s better to be safe than sorry…teachccd

I would suggest, if you can find the time, read about Theology of The Body. To me it help give some depth to the church teachings on chastity - that it was essentially the unified theory of the Churches teaching on sexuality. It focuses not on how God is trying to force us to be puritans, but on this great gift he has given us - and helps us to recognize just how great a gift it can be.

CCC 2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. “Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.” “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of “the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved.”
