Hi all. I went to confession almost 2 months ago and 1 of my confessions was masturbation. Ever since then I have been very tempted to do so but have refrained. However I have had numerous dreams about it and was wondering if there is anything you recommend I do to help with this? Is this the devil tempting me? I have not acted on the temptation but the dreams are really becoming a bother because I have refrained for quite some time.

Try finding some reading material that would put your mind in a better place before you go to bed. Some meditative prayer over the bible or other meditative reading sources for 10-15 minutes before bed might be good.

No, In the same way that demons aren’t tempting you to drink when you’re thirsty. Having sexual urges is part of being human. Chastity is a sacrifice, greater for some. As far as the dreams, it’s like dreaming of foods you crave when you’re on a diet. God bless.

The next time you go back to confession, confess anything that you are dwelling on. The graces of the sacrament will help you.

Coptic monks have always fallen asleep after repeating a short prayer many times so that it would continue to resound in their uncouscious throughout the night.

The Jesus Prayer, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner, is a very good one to repeat 100 or more times before retiring.

If you get up with that urge, continue saying that prayer.

“Beat your (spiritual) enemies down with the Name of Jesus.”

I was tempted like this tremendously, even when I was married. The source of my temptations was my focus on my self which became pure selfishness.

I overcame it by focusing on other things, especially by constant prayer. Sometimes God expects us to pray for a long time before He will answer to teach us how much we must rely on Him.

Again, the Name of Jesus, the Psalms and the Rosary are powerful weapons against . . . ourselves and our selfishness.

All of the above is great advice. Also keep in mind that you cannot control your dreams, so don’t get too worried about what happens in them while you are not conscious. It’s what you do while you are awake that matters…and prayer defintely helps, as does fasting.

I would HIGHLY recommend praying the our father prayer and hail mary 3 times each, morning, noon, and in the night. It has helpem me a lot

Masterbation is like a drug and takes time to get off of. Give yourself a break and give it a while. It’s like anything, you are breaking a habit.

What about a bath, exercise, prayer…

I stopped about two years ago and now I don’t even like how it feels at all…I actually feel sort-of violated.

in Christ,
~Lily

You’re going through withdrawal, be patient, pray.

I appreciate women. I look, I think, I dream, I have the physical response and I do nothing about it. Educate yourself about what it is you are doing. Masturbation is self gratification, using what was created for procreation, not to procreate. Masturbation is responding to your emotions allowing the notion that you can to rule your actions. Now after you know what it is you are doing, you believe it and you can honestly believe that it is something that is not natural read Veritatis Splendor. If you went to confession then you must believe it is a Mortal sin.

John Paul II teaches in that document true freedom, is freedom from fear. Filial fear is fear that we have because we fear we will not act in a way pleasing to God. If we masturbate we should fear loss of our Heavenly fathers love and approval of the use of the grace He has given us. Do you believe that the grace as a result of confession and contrition should be used to masturbate? Is this action the result of by grace you have been saved, through faith to be able to do works that are pleasing to God? Of course not.

I suggest you try listening to Catholic Radio 1310 AM continuously. I suggest you read your Bible in particular the Psalms. You can listen to the Psalms on tape or on the internet. I suggest you go to mass daily, I suggest you go to confession weekly if necessary. I suggest you consult the Catechism about this deed.

It is all about choice. That choice with God’s grace and fervent prayer and action will lead to virtue. Virtue comes with understanding and practice. When you succeed you will get on your knees and thank all of us at the forum including me for leading you to truth, well of course not,you will thank your God for leading you back to Him where you should be. While on your knees please pray for me as I will for you.

well, what i’ve heard recommended is simply to try and put that out of your mind after you wake up, don’t think about it and don’t lose your peace over it,
but a few things that might help, or what has helped me at least, is you can try and sleep with a blessed Crucifix in your hand, like i have a Saint Benedict cross i use,
you can also listen to religious audio books at night, such as these - tanbooks.com/index.php/page/shop:flypage/product_id/770
and also, just pray on it, ask God during your night prayers to protect you from bad dreams, ask your Guardian angel also and the Blessed Mother to guard you in your sleep from bad dreams,
and then just be patient with yourself, if you persevere in overcoming this sin and learn to really detest it and develop a sincere love of chastity and purity, then eventually you may find yourself resisting this sin even in your dreams(which i do now),
so just be patient and keep at it, and remember to pray every day especially at the moments of temptation.

alright, hope this helps, take care.

Thanks for the Tan site, I agree, everything that has been said on this post and more. Only you will know.

And if thy right hand scandalize thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish, rather than that thy whole body be cast into hell.

Make sure you use a very sharp blade.

After two months of refraining I was weak and did it today. I feel terrible. I know that I did it for so long and sometimes certain things are just hard to stop but I am upset with myself. I know I need to confession (I planned on going soon anyway) but I feel like if my priest remembers me from last time he’ll think low of me. I don’t understand why I feel the need to do this, I have never been sexually active in my life. Please pray for me

It’s because natural selection wants to reproduce before we die off. Only a few hundreds of years ago, reproduction amongst humans was in the early teenage years, as that’s when marriages began to compensate short life expectancies. Your body wants to do this, and if you don’t let it out, it will overload and come out in “wet dreams.” When you don’t understand why, learn about at the scientific explanation.

Hi,
Here is some important info about the Miraculous Medal.

“Have a medal struck… All who wear it will receive GREAT graces; they should wear it
around the neck. GRACES will ABOUND for persons who wear it with CONFIDENCE.”
From the mother of Jesus spoken to sister Catherine Laboure 1830.

During this apparition, Mary’s hands had 3 rings on each finger. Each ring gave off
rays of colored light. A few rings did not. Mary said that the lights radiating from
the rings are graces that people ASK for. The rings that didn’t radiate she said
were graces not given because they were NOT asked for.

Wear her miraculous medal. Then say, “Mary I am asking now for you to obtain
the graces for me which you have promised to give to those who ask and that have
trust in you.” Trust her, it works. She is the mother of God. She keeps her
promises.

Her wish is for you to have this. It is her gift.

“Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.”

The devil is not tempting you. Your body is merely responding to natural forces. We are, however, as humans and Christians, called to rise above our nature, that is, we are to respond to natural stimuli thoughtfully, not instinctively like an animal.

Yeah, that can be a difficult habit to kick. :-\

I just decided to convert maybe two months ago and it was my first big struggle quitting that habit. What I can tell you is that (a) you’ll never get over it if you dwell on sexual thoughts constantly; force them out of your head every time they pop in and eventually they will start visiting less often. Exercise, pray, whatever works – just don’t let them in! And (b) time really does help. Your body may rebel for a while against you but soon you will have control over it, especially if you succeed in (a) above.

I think I’ve pretty much mastered myself. I still have moments of weakness periodically but I’m amazed at how easy this cross has been to bear since I decided to join the Church. Hopefully you’ll be that amazed before long, too!

the priest won’t think low of you, believe me, and no priest should have such high expectations for someone that they would be disappointed in them for falling, instead the priest would more likely have greater respect for you for coming to confession and being so honest and sincere, because what really causes more disappointment for a priest is when people come and pile sin upon sin by making an unworthy confession by concealing things,

but just don’t let that bother you, because what that really is, is pride; to want to conceal what is true in order to gain respect, but in turn by gaining someone’s respect through dishonesty, you end up displeasing the one who matters most, God.
and believe it or not, being upset with yourself that way is also pride, because the reason you are upset is you do not regard yourself as the weak creature you really are, and although we should have sorrow for our sins, it should be because of how they offend God and how they have hurt Jesus, but not because we expected better from ourselves, it is because someone expects better of themselves that they fall and become disappointed, because then they are relying on their own strength, which they do not have, and they end up neglecting to seek Gods help in all things and then inevitably fall,
instead when you have sinned in some way, you should immediately turn to God, make an act of contrition, do some kind of penance(like say a prayer or offer up some suffering) resolve to do better next time, and go to confession as soon as possible if necessary.

when you realize that you do not have the strength yourself to resist sin, but that you are completely and utterly dependent on God for the grace to do any good, then you will become less upset with yourself for sinning, and more focused on seeking Gods help in all things, taking each fall; not as a source of depression, but as an opportunity to learn from your mistakes, and to know yourself better,
because humility is really the virtue of truth, it’s knowing yourself and what you can expect from yourself, by which you may be able to better avoid the sins you are prone to, and also grow in the virtues you are in need of.

and if you need help in really overcoming this sin for good, i have some suggestions,
first, listen to this - audiosancto.org/categories/purity.php
and also, take up the practice of saying 3 Hail Marys in the morning and at night for the intentions of purity and holiness, that was the practice of Saint Maria Goretti, and it was the thing my confessor recommended to me, after which i never sinned that way again.

alright, hope this helps, take care.

As the previous two posts have assured you, the priest will not think low of you. Priests have reminded me in the past, they go to Confession too. No worries, they understand. They’re there to help you, not to judge you.

If you don’t already, you should pray the Rosary and ask the Blessed Virgin to assist you in this battle. Take in all the advice everyone is giving you. Also, search previous threads for how to fight this. I found several things on here that have (and still are) helping me get over this.

I’ll say a prayer for you. God bless. 🙂
