Materals for studying Mary in the Bible and in History of the church?

I am trying to understand Mary better from a Biblical and historical perspective. Do people know of any suggestions, good books by good theologians/ historians/scholars?

Let me speak from personal experience here: what you want is Archbishop Fulton Sheen’s The World’s First Love.

I was in much the same position as you. Though I never doubted the Catholic Church, there was a time, about three years ago, when I was more than a little uncomfortable at some of the folk devotions to Our Blessed Mother that I’d seen, such as the prayer service where women would get up and say “Jesus never listened to me, but only Mary did!” At that moment, I longed for a book that would “explain it all”, and help me understand what the hyperdulia rendered to Our Lady was all about.

This book explained it all. I can honestly say that it was a life-changer. Soon after reading it, I took up the daily Rosary as a private devotion, and I’m still going strong at it.

Archbishop, if you’re “looking down from up there”*, thank you for this book. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

• I know that’s a crude anthropomorphism, but I couldn’t resist.

In addition to the above recommendations (which are both great), you might also be interested in Edward Sri’s “The Queen Mother”. It’s more narrowly focused, but it’s very scriptural.

True, that concept is key to understanding the Catholic teachings on Our Lady.

And while I’m about it, if you want something a little heavier, there’s Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange’s The Mother of the Saviour and our Interior Life. Excellent, but definitely requires some effort.

Mary is on every page of sacred scripture because Her Son is on every page of sacred scripture for as the poem goes, “Mary had a Little Lamb, His fleece was white as snow, and everywhere that Mary went, Her Lamb was sure to go.”
