Our daughter is having difficulty with math. She comes home with lessons that I feel I am starting from scratch.I will be going to kumon math tutoring to inquire but was wondering if anyone has any resources they know about to help with 4th grade math. Tests are timed in her class and she draws a blank, or second guesses or has no clue about how to do it.

When I asked the teacher-she says she has math anxiety–is this a thing?
She attends a Catholic school with common core math, and they are complicating the operations of most of the easiest things-and she has to show work…
She gets a’s and b’s in other subjects, is a good pupil, no behavior issues at all. She cries that she can’t understand her math, and then gets more worried and stressed out.

What can I do at home to help her relax and learn math in a fun way? The teacher jsut sent home a test to redo with me, and she will get an A becase we worked together. Dd had no clue how to do it) To me that’s not learning-she needs to do this on her own and undersatnd what she is doing.

Please help–
 
It would help if you could give more details on the type of math she was studying.

There are also materials online, some of which are used by homeschoolers, that can aid you in teaching your daughter.

This has been my weakness too. Word problems. I struggle with translating words into symbols. What really helps is rewording the problem by focusing on what is asked for and then after that focusing on what the lesson is for the moment, what mathematical process is being taught.

After all the object of the word problem is to put into practice the mathematical concept being taught.
 
I don’t know what your daughter’s particular situation is, but bad math curriculum and bad teaching can both cause the sort of reaction you mention.

My big kids are both very math-y (and daddy is very math-y) and my son was crying over his math in 1st grade. (This is a kid who has subsequently taken a lot of prizes in math contests.) What turned out to be the problem was that 1) the school had switched from Singapore Math to the American version of Singapore Math and 2) the teacher had been assigning homework for stuff that hadn’t been done in class yet. The Singapore Math for that age is verbally totally transparent, whereas the American edition had introduced the current American math sins of unfamiliar terminology and making easy stuff hard.

We want to make hard stuff easy, right, not easy stuff hard?

They worked out the kinks in the new curriculum, and I haven’t seen any problems since. But every time a new curriculum is introduced, there’s potential for a trainwreck because the teachers aren’t used to working with it. (And why the heck–aside from the need to sell more textbooks–does elementary school math curriculum need to be reworked every few years?)

The old archives of Catherine Johnson’s Kitchen Table Math were very helpful to me. You might also want to google “math wars.” Katharine Beals at oilf.blogspot.com is also a good resource. In fact, those are both very busy ladies, but it’s worth shooting them an email.

Another thing to watch out for is the recent fad for “spiraling.” Instead of thoroughly introducing new subjects and moving forward on a firm foundation, a recent tendency is to introduce small amounts of various subjects, with no proper foundation and no possibility of getting enough practice to be good at the subject. And then repeating that every year…That is one of features of new math curriculum that makes it virtually impossible to keep up with at home. And a tutor may run into similar issues remediating this stuff, because it can be a big mess.

So while it’s possible your daughter has math anxiety or a learning disability, it’s possible that her problems have very little to do with her personally.

I’ve heard the term “dyscalculia” instead of “math anxiety” to describe a learning disorder that specifically relates to math.Teachers often don’t use the current medical terms for learning disorders for a variety of reasons. For one thing, they aren’t doctors or psychologists, and there are legal restrictions on who can diagnose learning disorders. I don’t know if that’s what’s going on, and we aren’t suppose to give medical advice here, but that word “dyscalculia” came to my mind when I read your post. It might be worthwhile to investigate it further.

I don’t know about the Kumon centers personally, but we’ve done a lot with Kumon workbooks. One of the great virtues of their workbook series is that they offer a lot of practice and they have more and more specialized workbooks on particular areas.

Here’s a possible plan. Get through the school year alive. Then have a serious summer, very sequential math program for your daughter.

I don’t know what would work for your daughter in particular, but Kumon has a geometry and measurement series from grades 1-6 that we really like. They also have a work problem series from grades 1-6. Furthermore, they have whole workbooks devoted entirely to decimals and fractions. There’s a grade 4 decimals and fractions" book and a grade 5 decimals and fractions book.

Math anxiety? That’s a new one for me. 😃

She could have a specific learning disability related to math, though.
 
My heart goes out to you. Went through that common core stuff with 5 kids. Never really liked the stuff but kind of understand it. The main reason we tend not to like it is because that is not how we learned it. I think one of the hardest parts of the entire common core stuff is that they start it at a young age when problems are simple enough that we adults can do them in our head. Were as quite a bit of the common core has to deal with getting the numbers to the 10s or 100s to solve the problem. I am no math teacher but this is how I understood it. Basically rounding to the nearest 10 or 100.

So the goal is to get the child to see the number as well as what the number can become.

Let’s take 26 + 17 = 43

As an adult I did this in my head. But the teachers goal is to get the student to be able to see that this is the same as

26 + 4 + 13 = 43

Remember the goal is rounding to the nearest 10. Since we have a 6 we can get the 6 to 10 by adding a 4. The only way to get the 4 is to recognize that 4 + 13 = 17.

Therefore: Since 6 + 4 = 10 we have

26 + 4 = 30
30 + 13 = 43 which is the same as
26 + 17 = 43

The goal is to get the child to think this way for harder problems that we can’t write down. This is how I came to realize that in a way my mind does use common core math.

Let’s take 257 - 86 = ?

Do it in your head before moving on because that is the ultimate goal…

The way my mind works I automatically see that 86 is less than 100 therefore I grab 157 and set it aside. Next I take the extra 100 and subtract 86 to get 14. Then I add 14 to the 157 in my mind by saying 157 +10 = 167 + 4 and get 171. What did you get?

In a way that is common core.

The way common core breaks it down is by starting with the 86.

to get 86 to 90 we need to add 4
to get 90 to 100 we need to add 10
to get 100 to 200 we need to add 100
to get 200 to 257 we need to add 57

Therefore 100 + 57 +10 + 4 = 171.

Somewhat similar to the way I was doing it in my head all along. Once I realized this I was more open to common core.

Maybe you could share one of her math problems.
 
My daughter experiences anxiety with math, but it’s because she needs to go at a slower pace than her peers. She takes more practice and time for the ideas to sink in. Once the concepts are mastered, she can eventually place the ideas and processes in a word problem, but not immediately.

One thing I did for my daughter was to buy a program called MathUSee. It was slow paced and had an instructional video for her to follow along. We were able to back up a bit from where she was in her text and re-focused on some more core concepts (not to be mistaken with common core!) We did this for a few months and then returned to normal text book, but back a few lessons. It was the best thing I could have ever done for her. She got a breather. I relaxed. She listened to a calm instructor explaining concepts in a way she could grasp and remember.

I did not care to use Math U See for more core math curriculum, but it was a great way to fill in some much needed gaps in her understanding of math. It also gave her confidence to go forwarded. Perhaps you could look into it for a daily math lesson over summer?

RE: common core. As a previous poster noted, the “tricks” and concepts common core teaches are simple math computations that those with a solid understanding and grasp of math frequently use to do mental math. The unfortunate thing is that not every child is ready to make that leap into doing the splitting of the numbers. I find its better to teach the math concepts in a more basic way and then proceed to teach the tips and tricks of quick computation when they are more ready to mentally “see” the numbers in various ways. Some will automatically do the quick tricks, some won’t need to as they calculate quickly already, some can find those tricks fun when presented in math games, etc.

One thing Kumon gets right is that they give a very solid grounding of the fundamentals. A lot of people lack this and difficulties in math are often attributed to lack of ability instead of lack of understanding of the basics. It’s like ability to do math is some kind of superpower. It’s not.
 
Let’s suppose your DD has remedial maths need. Now don’t look for a remedy of that officially. From what I hear one is extraordinarily lucky to get that.

My memory is as follows. At age 6 I was getting distressed because I was getting some subtractions wrong. (We were doing “sums” in “Pink and Green” workbooks.)

At the same time, I couldn’t shape some of my letters properly.

At the first class in the next school we used Cuisenaire. To this day, around numbers I feel in my fingers the edge of the blocks, over 50 years later, and see the blocks alongside each other. It has piggy backed off, and fed into, my love of colours.

In the second class (age 8) we chanted our times tables as they hung at the front. To this day, around numbers I see the whole chart as if printed on the blank ceiling, so that I can “read it off” over 50 years later.

The multidimensional and multisensory grounding while I still was in my formative years have been a huge part of the secret of my success altogether. Without these gifts through inspired teachers, I would have been heading for mental breakdown and the social scrap heap.

Many advanced readers like me and your DD have underlying characteristics of dyslexia and dyscalculia. (Functionaries may be “allergic” to this being mentioned in their hearing.) Don’t take the “dys” as “dissing”. It merely means healthy diversity and doesn’t exclude us from grasping something when we deepen and widen our methods. Comedian Eddie Izzard and racing driver Jackie Stewart have expressed gratefulness for their “gift” of “dyslexia” as a way of encouraging young people like them to feel good. What it’s really about is to harness our strengths and support our weaknesses at the same time. Whilst maths is taken as vaguely conceptual in some weird way, deep down it is highly multisensory and multidimensional as well.

What Xantippe calls “spiralling” and making simple things difficult are things I have fallen victim to to some extent in other classes over the years (including the later maths class). Unconsciously I think the emotional fallout deterred me from taking an interest in branches of knowledge before the last year or two.

May I suggest a hobby for you two, that is probably better and more relaxing than the average television programme.

A Cuisenaire set will be a must I should think.

I hope the resources others are pointing you to will also furnish you both with a range of suitable helps.

Colour coding one’s belongings and grouping them is a great way of doing decor in a bedroom or kitchen! It trains the visualisation skills. It did take a workplace coach, and a couple of skilled OT-style support workers, that I was unusually lucky to briefly have, to help me along some more. (And not all of what gets called “OT” is suitable.)

(At the office I started a colour-coding craze among colleagues that didn’t need “reasonable adjustments”, they all saw the benefit!)

Most people’s homes don’t have enough open shelving. Seeing objects stimulates visual thinking.

The whole thing is not a case of nagging people to fall into line. It’s about being allowed to exercise the huge gifts we already have.

A few localities have a “dyslexia” society or similar, which one is sometimes allowed to join, which have fun and constructive activities or advice, without being “branded” in any way. (Even an “autistic” boy who lines his cars up in exact rainbow order gets a lot of opposition from his elders, but he is truly a great scientist!)
 
Blaming the anxious for being anxious when it is them that is making them anxious is very mean though you will yourself be blamed if you throw that in their faces!

Fractions and decimals are very advanced in themselves. The paradox between wholes and parts that one can’t even express are stretching us beyond our limits in the philosophy columns in this forum, so it’s very good to start young !!! 🙂

If the rest of the family will indulge the “breach of etiquette”, dining room utensils, cruets, vegetables and fruits etc etc are great for exercising all these areas!

Even when not “actively” taking part in an “exercise”, the decor idea and the open display idea can be great for a relaxed, subliminal way of developing the visual imagination.
 
So is the problem that she simply doesn’t get it or rather that she makes mistakes? Also is she getting like 20% right or 70%? Finally, is the goal to pull her grades up to an A or to give her enough skills to make it to the next level, even if not perfect?

Let’s face it, some kids are just not good at math. If this is an area she struggles in and there is pressure to get an A or B then that can be causing a good deal of her stress. Sometimes it is better for a kid to fail or be behind a year in a subject than to try to force perfection on them. It is sad that we have lost the understanding that a C is average and… well… most of us are average. I am not saying you are doing this, but I sometimes find that we don’t want to accept limitations of our kids and inadvertently cause issues by saying “you have to work harder to do better” rather than saying “you are doing your best”.

If it is particularly word problems that she stuggles with, have you tried breaking the problem down visually? My kids are very visual so we actually draw out the elements of the problem on scratch paper and then draw lines between relationships. It ends up being a multiple pass type operation. After drawing relationship lines we cross out any irrelevant elements. From the picture we rewrite the problem without extraneous details (similar to what Sarcelle suggested). In some cases it has become almost a story board. This helped them focus on what was important versus superfluous. That is one of the key challenges of a word problem. Once she has a better grasp of how to parse out relevant information she might not need the visual story approach. Then again I’m 30 years past elementary school and still find visually sketching a problem comes in handy sometimes.

I am kind of thinking out loud here: I have no particular expertise, but…

When I first started seeing what they were doing with Common Core Math, I was disturbed. Many of the methods they are teaching were what I had learned *after *I had learned my basic math facts. These shortcuts worked for me because I had a really good understanding of the basics.

Another possible problem is that what is supposed to happen as the teacher teaches and the student learns is that the teacher “models” what is to be done, then guides the students through the process, and finally simply oversees as the students does it. I am a lot better at doing this when I have a firm grasp of the methods; otherwise, I am a little shaky, iyswim.

What I would try, if I were in your shoes, is to go through all the basic math operations she ought to know, using real situations, and without the necessity of doing it in the CC way. You may need to do some of the math facts review by slogging through with flashcards, but if you can get another child involved and have a good prize, you may be able to ease your load. But I would most focus on actually doing things involving using numbers, and discussing real-life problems out loud–these would be word problems if they were written.

For example, my children and I used to work out huge mathematical problems in the car—questions like how many minutes there are in a day, and then how many seconds; how much gas it takes to go to grandparents’ house, and then how much in the smaller car—that sort of thing. I “modeled” by thinking out loud through the whole process, and the children corrected me when I made mistakes 😉 (they liked that). And of course, baking a lot and using math to figure it all out, which involves doubling or halving recipes (which is easy to do with some of the recipe sites, because they will adjust the recipes to the numbers of servings you put in. So if you want to make enough for 4, and “just happen” to print out a recipe for 8 or 12, there’s a lot of math to be done. Do be very careful to remember to change *all *the ingredients :o)

I think giving her a much firmer foundation will help her a lot. If you can get a hold of the 4th grade book and the 5th grade book, you may be able to use them yourself as guides to what she should concentrate on. It may be that she needs some tutoring as well, but try to have this happen in a very cheerful way: hire a jolly high school student over a serious math professor, iyswim.
 
I forgot to include to use a lot of manipulatives—Cuisinaire rods as others have mentioned, and fraction circles *and squares. *

Putting candies in paper bags for a group of children, lots of measuring of water in plastic measuring utensils, etc.
 
Thank you all for your suggestions–yes, the math she is learning sometimes makes easy things harder through the operations they want to see.

Dh 's degree is math-- and thinks that she needs a review of 4th grade maybe even 3rd, as there may be a disconnect somewhere. Dd tells me the tests are timed and puts too much pressure- and makes her anxious too.

Our older kids went to a different elementary school and had no issues-maybe one or two-but nothing major and I hate to blame teachers. I know that they do not have manipulatives in class though.

So it’s a puzzle-the only thing I know is that she needs to get help and relax. I will be researching all the links and I appreciate all of your feedback.
 
If I understand correctly:
  • If you simply write out equations, she has no problem solving them? Doing the math?
  • She can not translate a word problem into the relevant equation?
If that is the case, she is not seeing math as a language. Just symbols. Hard to overcome, you need to focus on key words that translate to add/ subtract/ multiply /divide. Show her how words translate to mathematical operations. Both of my girls had this issue-- I could give them the equation but they couldn’t reason how to come up with the equation for a word problem. “Just tell me how to do it” was always their response to me trying to show them how to reason out the appropriate method/math to solve.

A simple example, Kathy has 60 cantaloupes (for some unknown reason we won’t delve into) and wants to give an equal amount to her 6 friends. How many do each get? "

I’ve done a lot of math tutoring in my life. A learning disability is the diagnosis of exclusion. A student has to do a lot of work to convince me they are really bad at math. Such persons exist, but they aren’t that common and even when they are there are strategies for getting around their trials.

I would also go so far as to tell a fourth grader (as I have done) that it is probably an advantage to run up against a subject that gives you grief sooner rather than later. Most of us hit one, sooner or later, and it is better that it isn’t on some big important class in high school or college. Learning how to handle yourself and how to counter-attack a subject that ambushes you is a great piece of knowledge and a big confidence-builder, if only you are willing to see it that way. Success doesn’t fall into the laps of the talented. Success comes to those who will not let failure stop them from conquering their goal, anyway.

The first experience with academic hardship could not come at a better time than 4th or 5th grade. Let’s face it: Our grades in 4th grade will not have any necessary impact on our adult life. Our middle school grades may make some difference in what high school we get into, but our grades in 4th grade are not used to judge whether we ought to get future academic opportunities. We’re just short of the emotional roller-coaster of middle school and high school. Yeah, I’d say 4th grade is as good a time as any. More to the point, any student will be helped by thinking of herself as the kind of student who turns disadvantages into advantages. You can learn helplessness, but you can also learn tenacity and get a long ways by thinking of yourself as a person with typical abilities but an atypical refusal to let any subject beat her. I have even had a college professor tell me that A-/B students make better scientists than A+ students, because they aren’t stunned when they run into the obstacles that real life always throws everyone researching a real problem. I’d sell this situation that way.

In 4th grade, scholastic marks are only feedback meant to tell us how we have done in demonstrating our knowledge and skills. It is like being told your time in practice, before the day of the real race. It is the knowledge and skills that we will need later, not the grades. It is far better to get awful grades and a solid foundation of skills and knowledge than the other way around! It is no fun to learn the habit of tenacity, but it is a wonderful weapon in life, once you have it.

Math anxiety is a very real thing. It is harder to do math (or any higher thinking) when your mind is not relaxed. We all know sparkling conversationalists who become tongue-tied around someone they particularly want to impress or when they run into someone who responds negatively to all the speaking habits that work great around someone else. Math responds to different strategies than other subjects, it can be a “curve ball” to otherwise capable students, and so it can do the same thing to us.

One of the first tricks to dealing with math anxiety is to realize that this sort of anxiety is not atypical among people who eventually master all the math they need in this life. There are strategies for recognizing this anxiety and dealing with it. Students should certainly be taught that self-concept about one’s ability to do math is a fairly poor gauge of how likely one is to be able to learn to do it. People who are afraid of heights learn to climb mountains (I know one), people who are slow at reading can still become doctors (I know one of those, too), and people who start out with a math discomfort can become comfortable and proficient in math.

Another trick to learning to do math is to realize that some of us are born pre-wired with the “tricks”–that is, we just “see” how to do far more problems than a typical person does–and yet others without that pre-wiring can learn problem-solving skills that will get them to a very useful level of proficiency.

As for mastering the latest “teaching method,” I have likened it to learning methods of explaining math to others. When you learn someone else’s way of looking at math, you are learning how to explain your math work to someone who thinks about math differently than you do. That’s a useful skill, too, because yes, the day could come when you will be explaining your math thoughts to someone else, and you may need all the tools you can get!

If the method doesn’t make sense to you, learn the math concept via a different method, then go back and learn the method you’ve been asked to use to demonstrate the math.

As for word problems, I would suggest two things:
One is to learn what math information is needed to do a certain kind of problem. Once that is done, make lists of such information, throw in a few extra things onto each list, then practice identifying which things on the list are needed and which ones are not. Having done that, start doing word problems by generating just such a list of data from the problem. Once you have your list, you are back to the skill set of looking on the list for the information you want, ignoring the information that is irrelevant.

Finally: consider getting a white board. I’d get the biggest, highest-quality dry-erase white board you can accommodate in your home. Our children got one that is 4 x 6 FEET when they were in 4th or 5th grade. They are in high school, and they still use it constantly. It is great for discussing math and science and even for brain-storming writing ideas and also for quizzing students. That is some of the best money we ever spent on their education.
