Mathematics and Mass: Why the E.F. over the O.F

It is often argued that the EF is better than the OF because there is much greater reverance at it and people are paying more attention to Mass.

The point that was made was that this can be accounted for because whenever you have an EF Mass, you have a unique situation of only those being there who really want to be there. People have traveled for miles from all around to go to the EF Mass. Everyone there is very focused on his or her faith, or they wouldn’t be there.

On the other hand, at your average OF Mass, you have some devout, faithful people and a lot of folks that are there just for the sake of their family traditions, or cultural reasons, and stuff like that. These people arer the “chaff” he was referring to. For every person like me in Mass that is paying attention and reverantly participating, you have 10 others that are just there because they’re used to going or something and who are not participating in that way.

The point was that the OF is not necessarily less reverant than the EF, but the EF seems to be because only reverant and devout people are attending and none of the “don’t really care” sort of people are.

And for the record, I currently attend a NO mass. I like to think of myself as having more “wheatlike” qualities, LOL.

You may be onto something here. Can you now figure the probability of hitting a “reverent” Mass on any given Sunday, say, within a metropolitan area?

i would have to say its probably gonna be at least 1/(total number of parishes), and probably closer to 4 or 5 times that number, as a Church that does one Mass right usually does all of thier Masses right. The question is, will you have money left for the collection, or will it have all gone down your gas tank. $3.79 by me right now, and thats cheaper than other parts of my state. I feel like im tithing to the oil companies

Not to mention the high price of those morning donuts at those gas stations.

I save money on not buying that bottled tap water every day. Quite a savings there.

And I do understand the frustration and the hypersensitivity, because a dismissive and elitist attitude does exist among many self-labeled “traditionalists”.

The funny thing is, I used to attend a TLM exclusively for about 2-1/2 years. I loved the mass, its reverence and beauty, but I didn’t learn anything new that I didn’t already know prior to attending (i.e. it’s not like I suddenly “learned” my Catholic faith). And when I moved and started attending the NO (with an occasional visit to a TLM when I could find one) my habits and spirituality didn’t change. But many on traditionalists forums would refer to me as a “NO Catholic” or even a neocon!

What’s a Catholic to do?!
