how, given that the new roman missal is supposed to translate the latin more accurately, can we say “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof: but only say the word, and my SOUL shall be healed.”

Why??? I take it we are God’s servants, my identity is not in the flesh, like St.Paul says, it is in the inner man,the heart, which is the Soul.The Soul is what God is most concerned with.

I never knew that this response in the Mass was supposed to be a direct quote from scripture in the first place.I knew it was based on scripture as an expression of faith.

It still makes sense to me. Jesus, was a servant to man, that is why he always called himself “son of man” or “son of Adam”. The Catholic Faith, through the power of the Holy Spirit has the Authority of binding and loosening even in the Liturgy. Jesus, was both human and divine, we are called to be servants, like Jesus, in perfect Charity. So even, if it is referring to body and Soul our mission on earth is the same one of service,Charity.We are calling for healing of ourselves so we can get the Grace,from God’s Spirit, to heal us and give us more Charity(perfect Love).

Well one is what someone said 2000 years ago, should we respond today at the mass in the same way?

Actually in Spanish or Italian the way it is said is as the English “new” form except there the “soul” is missing as “I” is composed of both matter and spirit. I guess the anglos like to complicate matters.

" Señor, no soy digno de que entres en mi casa, pero una palabra tuya bastará para sanarme." (literally I will be Healed)

“O Signore, non sono degno di partecipare alla tua mensa; ma dì soltanto una parola e io sarò salvato.” (I will be saved)

Which makes a lot more sense that repeating the words of the Centurion does it not?
After all it is US that are going to be receiving Him, it is us that need to exclaim or take as ours the words of the Centurion.

Possibly the issue was with the missal translation itself. Someone instead of translating the missal went and took the words out of the Gospel. Which is WHERE the theology comes from but NOT what the Church says AT Mass!

Sorry guanophore for the confusion, you are right about Jesus never referring to himself directly as “son of Adam”. But the Hebrew does translate" man" as “Adam”. Sacred Scripture only referred to Jesus as the" New Adam". I totally agree the context son of man is for the line of David.

The term used is “my soul” not my servant"

It is not supposed to be a better translation from scripture. It is a better translation of the Latin from the wording of the 1962 Missal.

Domine, non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum, sed tantum dic verbo et sanabitur anima mea.

Literally: Lord, i am not worthy that You should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

It’s called “using the language of Scripture.” It’s not meant to be a direct, word-for-word quotation of the passage in question but is meant to evoke it.
