Matins Question

Okay, so tomorrow is the Feast of the Sacred Heart, may I say the office of Readings straight after compline tonight? And begin with Morning Prayer (lauds) tomorrow when I get up? When I attend Morning prayer actually in my church they do the two together, beginning with the Office of Readings. I have been led to believe you can implement the OoR as an overnight hour? Provided it follows night prayer and comes after midnight? Am I correct? A swift answer to this would be of great assistance!

Matins used to be said during the night (at sometimes midnight, at other times 2am) and Matins and Lauds (aka Laudes Matutinas) used to be one office at one point way back in the day and called the Office of Vigils. Matins has evolved quite a bit over the centuries. So given the historical nature of Matins it would certainly be appropriate to say Matins with Compline tonight. In terms of what’s allowed now, Matins can be said from after Vespers the evening before until midnight the following day, but preferably said during the night, as it is historically a vigil, so many people return it to its place next to Lauds. Out of convenience, it can be said at any time after the previous day’s Vespers (in this case that hour is replaced with First Vespers of the Sacred Heart, so any time after that is ok)

In the revised Liturgy of the Hours of the 70’s or so, Office of Readings is atemporal, and can be recited, especially in private recitation, at any convenient time.

The Office of Readings may be recited any time after Vespers of the day before.
If you want to pray Wednesday Office of Readings, for instance, you may recite the Office of Readings any time between Tuesday Vespers and Wednesday Vespers.
My preference is to pray the Office of Readings first thing in the morning followed by 6am Lauds followed by the Little Crown of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Many communities go straight from Lauds into the daily Mass.

If you want to pray Wednesday Office of Readings, for instance, you may recite the Office of Readings any time between Tuesday Vespers and Wednesday Vespers.

There is no reason that Wednesday’s Office of Readings cannot be recited following Wednesday Vespers and before Compline.

These are the only instructions I find in the introduction to Christian Prayer re: The Office of Readings.

The Office of Readings (Matins) may be recited at any hour of the day, even during the night hours of the previous day, after Evening Prayer (Vespers) has been said.

If the Office of Readings is said immediately before another Hour of the Office, then the appropriate hymn for that Hour may be sung at the beginning of the Office of Readings, the prayer and conclusion are omitted, and in the Hour following, the introductory verse with the Glory Be is omitted.
