In today’s Gospel the linkage from David to Jacob, Joseph’s father, is given. This states that Joseph is a descendant of David. BUT-Joseph was not the father of Jesus, the Holy Spirit was. How then is Jesus related to king David?? I know many things have to be accepted by faith but is there an answer other than that?

Joseph was absolutely Jesus’ earthly father, even though a step-father!

It is my understanding that in the Jewish culture of Jesus’ day, the children & even cousins (Aramaic, which Jesus & His family spoke, had no word for cousins, all males were “brothers”) retained the rights of inheritance & family status.

You might find this interesting. Mary by her betrothal to Joseph became of the line of David.

Victorinus wrote a commentary on the Revelation of John sometime in the third or fourth century. When commenting on the four beasts around the throne of God (chapter 4, verses 7-10) he says of the fourth “in the figure of a man, Matthew strives to declare to us the genealogy of Mary, from whom Christ took flesh.” (see here). That is why the genealogy found in Luke is different (that is Joseph’s genealogy). Both point back to King David, so there is no question that Jesus is a true descendant of King David.

The two genealogies are remarkably different, however, disagreeing completely on the lineage from Joseph, the putative father of Jesus, back to David. It has been traditional to assume that Luke’s genealogy traces through Mary since at least 1490.[1] Matthew begins at the patriarch Abraham and traces a descent through David’s son King Solomon, omitting several generations along the way. Luke proceeds upward, through David’s son Nathan, continuing all the way to the first man, Adam.

Both gospels clearly state that Jesus was begotten not by Joseph, but by God, being born to Mary through a virgin birth. In the Jewish tradition of the time, the fact that a father claimed and named a son meant he was completely (legally) the father. So it’s not necessary to describe Joseph as a step- or foster father (neither would be accurate in those times). The fact that Joseph accepted Jesus as his son, and named him, meant he was, to contemporary understanding, completely his father (the act of conception notwithstanding).
