I attend a Byzantine Catholic Church, but occasionally celebrate the sacrifice of the Mass at my parents Parish (Aquinas Newman Center at our local University). At one of the services, they play more contemporary music, much written by Matt Maher.

He writes some beautiful pieces, Lamb of God is my favorite. My question is this, is Matt Maher Catholic? I have read his blog and he has quoted the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI and has spoken favorably of the Catholic Church.

Thanks and God bless,
ZP

Not sure he has to be catholic to write anything sung at the mass. Far as I know, Wesley is sung at the Mass, so are Luther’s works (I am told by Lutherans). Not sure about Calvin. I bet there is some of it out there. There are non believers that play instruments at Mass from time to time. So, I guess anything goes.

Thanks StrawberryJam for your response. I was not thinking that a song composed by a non-Catholic would be wrong or anything. Just was curious 🙂

God bless,
ZP

Glad to be of some help based on my limited chicago knowledge (which may be out of the norm?) But, I do think something about it’s place in the Mass is wrong, personally.

I have no problem with these songs being sung after the Mass, but during the Mass?

Call me what you will, but I find it innapropriate. And, offensive.

I just found out that he is Catholic. Played for Pope Benedict XVI when he visited the U.S. and he plays at the World Youth Days 😃

I prefer a more solemn Liturgy, but contemporary music is not bad on occasion 👍

You and me both.

Divine Liturgy is very beautiful.

I wish catholics in the latin rite, could enjoy such a thing.

well we can, in the TLM, or a reverent Novus Ordo 😉

I’m speaking as a person who loves both the East and the West! including the Divine Liturgy 🙂

I do as well. I realize, the emotional love affair is not everything or all important though. What a lure it is anyway. Why on earth would God allow this kind of schism to begin with if he really exists, it seems he did what Solomon wanted to do to “test” who was the real mother by offering to cut the baby in half.

Why such a choice for so many? I have seen one very reverent Novus Ordo Mass, and I enjoyed it much.

It’s not about my enjoyment though.

I still have to make that jump like in the Nestea commercials. Close, but not taking that full plunge. Kinda the awkward person, trying to dip their feet in the water and recoilling in horror.

Matt is a great Catholic contemporary artist and composer. We sing his pieces all of the time because our music director is a friend and on the same recording label. See link below for his bio and you can listen to songs by him and other Catholic artists on the label also.

Check out Curtis Stephan’s Christmas CD “Born to Us” which has a beautiful original duet with Jesse Manibusan called “Someone is Waiting.” It can really make me cry during Advent.

Yes he is. He sang and lead music along with singer/songwriter Tom Booth at St. Timothy’s in Mesa, AZ. Such a beautiful gift he shares…

I first saw Matt Maher on an episode of Life on the Rock. Yes, I am 49, but I watch that show. I really like a lot of the guests and their message.

My favorite Matt Maher song is “Unwavering” from his album Empty and Beautiful. Most of his stuff is available on iTunes.

yes, of course he’s catholic. HE’S COOL LIKE ME! lol
😃

I’ve met him numerous times throught my teen years.
alot of his music has helped me get closer to God since i do love music.
sometimes it makes me cry (true sign of someone being happy-GUY OR GIRL!! :p)

hey, Singing is Praying twice!!
