Does anyone know of any books or resources on the life of Venerable Matt Talbot?

Everything I’ve found online is very short and, in my opinion, probably glossed over and romanticized.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you Marie. I actually read over that. It seems like everything written about him is very short. I’m really interested in details about his recovery and conversion. Everything you read makes it sound like one day he was like, bam, completely quit drinking. I know that he did have a moment of conversion where he decided to quit drinking but I’m sure there are details of the struggle and ups and downs. As a struggling addict of one thing or another I’d really like to learn about his lifelong battle with his demons.

Hi floyd 👋 Yes, I think that’s clear from the statement Blessed Matt made to his sister… “never look down on a man who takes the drink”… that he himself, suffered an immense struggle with alcohol.

I’m sorry I couldn’t find anything better. I hope someone will have better info on Blessed Matt. God bless you.

MV 🙂

I have no doubt that Matt struggled with his disease every day, just like every alcoholic does, and I believe this simply because he did not just stop drinking. He put into practice the principles taught by the excercises of St Ignatius of Loyola and was very devoted in his prayer discipline.

Have you tried contacting the people at the website dedicated to the cause of his cannonization to see if there is anything written about him you can review?

Although it’s not the most scholarly source, Wikipedia has an ok article about Matt Talbot. I also came across a biography of Matt Talbot, written by Eddie Doherty, which can by purchased here. It’s also available on amazon.com and it sounds like a well researched book.
