What does Jesus mean when he says he didn’t come to bring peace…?

34 'Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: it is not peace I have come to bring, but a sword.
35 For I have come to set son against father, daughter against mother, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law;
36 a person’s enemies will be the members of his own household.

I think it’s a warning - not that He wants us to be in conflict but that if we respond to His call, which is quite radical, when you think about it, it will inevitably cause conflict. We are being asked to choose sides in the battle between Good and Evil - there are no neutral parties.

Jesus meant He would be a cause of division. As is clear from the different denominations in Christianity.

I personaly think he was trying to explain how he was going ot make peace in this world. There is a latin phrase I cant remember it entirely, it is from the Movie, The Punisher, (not warzone, that was a piece of Trash) Frank castle says, Sicvus Pochem Parabelum, It means, If you want peace, prepare for War.

What Jesus was ultimatly doing was declaring War on the PRince of this age, who is the Devil. He brought peace for us, and war to Hell.

The next verse says “that he who loves is father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and he who loves his son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me”.
I think if you look at the verses before and after (in context) Jesus is telling us that if we love him, more than anything else, we have nothing to fear (loving him also means keeping his commandments). This will at times create enemies even in our own families. It is entirely possible that someone in your family will cut you off if you stay true to the teaches of the Church. Jesus is telling you this may happen and that you must remain true to Christ. Basically what the other posts said as well.
