[BIBLEDRB]Matthew 12:40[/BIBLEDRB]

I’ve had an ongoing discussion with my (fallen away) Uncle for several years. He returns to this verse whenever we begin to get anywhere and insists it proves the Catholic Church is in error…

If Jesus was crucified and buried on Friday afternoon and was raised Sunday morning, that can not possibly equal “3 days and 3 nights”… I’ve argued the case that the people of the time counted any part of a day as a complete day (which they indeed did) so that since Jesus was buried during Friday, remained buried Saturday and rose on Sunday, that would have been counted as 3 days… Friday, Saturday and Sunday…

He counters with “What about the 3 nights?”

I’m unsure what his point is and why it matters but it seems to be a logjam… Anyone able to help?

Thanks

God bless

I’m curious; is your father a practicing member of any other faith tradition, e.g. Protestant, Baptist, Episcopal, etc.? Is he agnostic or atheist?

…ask your father where in Scriptures does it says three days and three nights as 24 hour periods?

…God Created the universe in six days… interestingly enough Scriptures does not state that it was six twenty-four-hour periods!

…as for Jesus’ death and Resurrection:
a) Friday (before Sabbath)
b) Sabbath
c) Rose on the first day of the week!

Maran atha!

Here is a concept to consider:
If there was Friday night, then Saturday day, then Saturday night, then He rose over in Jerusalem. Then at the same time in Americas, there must have been Friday day, then Friday night, then Saturday day, then He rose. Therefore, there were 3 days and 3 nights.

St. Augustine clearly states that it was common for the writers of Scripture to use partial days as full days. Second, where in Scripture does it say that Jonah was in the belly of the fish for 3 full 24 hour periods? How do we know that Jonah was not in the belly for the exact same number of hours and commencing at the exact same time as Jesus’ death and ressurection? Scripture doesn’t indicate one way or the other. Sounds like your Uncle is using a pretty weak argument to trash the Church that Jesus established. When someone tries to interpret Scripture on their own, without understanding historical context, errors are sure to follow.

To everyone saying "Where does it say it was a 24 hour period… It doesn’t. What Scripture DOES say is that Jesus will be in the heart of the earth for 3 days and 3 nights. Right there in Matthew 12:40…

So if He is buried Good Friday, during the day, I would say, and my uncle agrees, that is one day by the reconning of the people at the time… Friday night is 1 night… Saturday morning is the 2nd day. Saturday night the 2nd night… Sunrise Sunday, the third day… Still leaves us a night short.

Originally I thought that Jesus was considered “in the heart of the Earth” starting at His arrest on Thursday night. But that seems like a stretch.

Numbers in the Bible; ALL of them have a highly symbolic signifiance beyond what is today’s common understanding. WHY?

Because in OT times;God’s WORDS and TEACHINGS were more widely spread by word of mounth than in written forms due to illaratacy and the cost of writting materials. Therefore the fathers used “numbers” to convey important parts of the taught message.

“Many of the numbers in the Bible have deeper prophetic or spiritual significance. Both in the Old and New Testaments, numbers reveal hidden concepts and meanings that commonly escape the casual reader. And throughout history, men with great minds, like Augustine, Isaac Newton, and Leonardo Di Vinci, showed more than just a passing curiosity regarding the importance of biblical numbers.

At least 12 numbers in the Bible stand out in this regard: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 40, 50, and 70. In order to express this truth, one or two biblical examples have been given below. However, much more can be said on this subject, so these examples serve merely as an introduction and are not exhaustive by any means.

3 – represents the Godhead / Trinity. The angels cry “Holy” three times to the triune God (Isaiah 6:3). See also Matthew 28:19 and 1 John 5:7, 8.” Most Amazing Prophecies | Amazing Facts.

Also keep in MIND that this MUST FACTOR in that in Hewbrew times there was NO calendar, and time keeping was different…

The idea that evey numer in the bible is to be taken literally is both dangerous to ones salvation and lacking critical understanding.

[IMO] this is verly likely just an excuse. Try to uncover the REAL reason and you MAY find it has to do with his life style choices?

Faith; TRUE FAITH can only be granted by God. A part of “the One True God; One true set of Faith beliefs, and only One Church” lies in the FACT that True Faith comes only from God.Key components of that One True Faith are: God alone supplied Wisdom;Knowledge and Right Understanding.

One Church

John.10: 16 “And I have other sheep, that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd”

Eph. 4: 1-7 “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

Eph. 2:19-20 “So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.”

Eph. 3: 9-10 “And to make all men see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; that through the church [singular] the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places. This was according to the eternal purpose which he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord,
