I hope this will add to the discusion instead of detract from it.
Jesus takes the disciples to Caesarea Philippi, 1,147 ft. above the sea on a steep mountain. From a cavern bursts a river, the upper source of the Jordan. This cave was the ancient heathen sanctuary of Pan. (the god of springs and shephards) Jesus the true God of shepherds, appoints Peter as the Rock, steward of his kingdom and shepard of his flock. On a rock wall above them stood a temple to Caesar-Augustus who considered himself a god. By choosing ths location for the appointment, Jesus clearly shows that he is setting up his divine kingdom in opposition to the worldly kingdom of the Roman Caesars. Peter the foundation Rock of the spiritual temple which Jesus will build to the Lord of heaven, namely his church, is to be the disciple who first declared him the Messiah and truly the son of God. As the water flowed from the rock at Caesarea Philippi to feed the Jordan River, Peter was to be the leader and rock of the church, and from the church would flow the water of truth and life to the whole world, offering life, the salvation of Israel, both to Jew and Gentile. (Ezek 47:1, 9)

ryan, good point! If you look at the map and follow Jesus’ trek before and after this event, you’ll note that Jesus went WAY out of his way just to make this point. It bears further thought.
