I was looking for support of the Catholic interpretation of Matthew 16:18 which reads:
Matthew 16:18 - New American Standard Bible:
I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
While the Catholic Church interprets this to mean that Peter was the chosen head of the Church after Jesus’ death I have also heard the Protestant interpretation that it was speaking in regards to Faith… not necessarily Peter directly.

I know this topic has come up before, but it wasn’t until recently that I started thinking about this more in depth.

If anyone could provide evidence for either argument that would be great help.

Respectfully,
Mark

So far, it’s not clear why both can’t be right 🙂

“Peter” is Aramaic (the language Jesus spoke) for “rock.”

St. Peter’s Basilica was literally built over Pete’s tomb.

The passage doesn’t make sense if it’s solely talking about faith. “Blessed are you Peter! You are worthless, and here’s the authority of Heaven!”
